No cheesy vampires, no mushy "history", no pushing crappy souveniers. The volunteer tour guides are trained and tested on their knowledge of the French Quarter. We had an oustanding two hour walking tour with John (a transplant from Seattle who lives in the French Quarter) and learned an amazing amount about the development of New Orleans and the French Quarter. Was fascinating to learn the cultural stew that came together and how it formed a very unique culture. Included was how slavery affected New Orleans, the economic ups and downs of the area, as well as some recommendations for other historic sites.

This is the tour you should take if you really want to know about the history of New Orleans. As we walked through the Quarter our guide would stop and point out architectural features of historic buildings to illustrate the influence of the various ethnic groups that settled the city. She was extremely knowledgeable about how the political affairs in Europe led to the discovery, settlement and development of New Orleans, Louisiana and the territories beyond. We learned how the fusion of Spanish, French, Acadian and American cultures have contributed to the flavor of this unique city. I highly recommend the Friends of the Cabildo Walking Tour.

The walking tour by Friends of Cabildo was excellent. The tour guide was well educated on the history of the French Quarter, the architecture, and the current status of historic buildings in New Orleans. The tour was small, only 6 of us, even though it was a few days before Mardi Gras. She answered all of our questions, was insightful, and humorous. Couldn't recommend this tour more.
