If you want to know the history behind the fascinating city of New Orleans, this organization is the one to give it to you right. The Friends of the Cabildo is the support organization for the Louisiana State Museum which operates both the Cabildo, Presbyetere, Old U.S. Mint and other National Historic Landmark facilities in the French Quarter. All of the tour guides are certified and receive rigorous training, so they're giving you accurate information while they're also taking you to some of the best known and little known spots in the heart of the original city. And when you take a Friends of the Cabildo walking tour, all of your proceeds benefit the organization that supports the State Museum system, which needs all of the support it can get. No visit to New Orleans is complete without a Friends of the Cabildo walking tour!

After reading a review of the Friends of the Cabildo Walking Tour in a guide book we decided to give it a try. It turned out to be a fantastic way to start our vacation. Don Craig, our Tour Guide, was so knowledgeable about the area. He was full of great historical information but also gave us recommendations on things to do, restaurants, etc. A perfect way to get us oriented as this was our first trip to New Orleans. We loved the discussion on the Pontalba Buildings and now we can point out a Gallery vs a Balcony, which was a lot of fun. We enjoyed the tour so much that when we saw a description of a new tour of the Garden District given by the Friends of the Cabildo we decided to take that one too. We loved it! The staff in the 1850 House Museum were also very friendly and helpful.

We were fortunate to tour the French Quarter guided by Don Nolan, a life-long New Orleans native, history buff, and volunteer for Friends of the Cabildo, among other local community historical organisations who preserve local history, such as "Save Our Cemeteries" and the World War II museum. He was friendly and extremely knowledgeable, distinguishing between historical fact, myths and urban legends. We learned many interesting facts about architecture, former and present residents, including the woman who first incorporated lovely cast iron railings to adorn the buildings she designed (Pontalba block), which became so popular in other buildings of the time. Don also gave us an understanding of New Orleans' role in the development of the USA and how it's people and culture have influenced history, art, food and music, etc. We very much enjoyed the tour and would have loved to have spent the day picking his brain. The fee for the tour also included a self-guided tour of 1850s House (in the Pontalba Block adjacent to Jackson Square), a home showing furnishing representative of that period with interesting information about former families who had lived in the house. There was a nice gift shop with works from local artists, craftspeople and authors. It was nice to know our fees would go toward maintaining historical sits, including the house and the Cabildo Museum.
