I purchased 2 full day single kayak rentals (no guide) and was able to easily redeem on a day that was convenient for us. We had a great time, even if the winds were blowing quite hard and gave us a great workout. I read other reviews in advance and here's what you need to know if you rent a kayak from Twogood.
1) Go early! They open at 8:30 am. We arrived at 9:00 with water and sandwiches and other food items to snack on during our day. Expect to spend at least an hour signing in, listening to safety briefing, and learning where to go, etc.
2) You will be transporting the kayaks yourself to Kailua Beach. They will show you how to properly place the kayak on top of foam padding on the roof of your car. This requires you to have the strength to lift the kayak above your head and onto the roof (otherwise a guided tour may be a better option for you). Because you will need to do this when you return, YOU must do all the work so you can remember what to do hours later! Take a photo or video the instructions because you may not remember when you're tired.
3) On a Saturday morning in the off-season, we were able to find parking easily at Kailua Beach (another good reason to go early). Park as close to the stream as you can so you won't have to haul the kayaks very far. There is an unpaved parking area on the other side of the paved beach parking lot, in case you can't find nearby parking in the paved area. Best to review where to park with a google map with the employee in order to understand where to go.
4) We then had to remove the kayaks and carry them to the stream, then over the sand to the beach. Again, you need to have the strength to do this yourself including AFTER paddling all day (or half day).
5) Rental kayaks will always be much more difficult to maneuver. We had to work pretty hard to ensure our 'yak went in the direction we wanted. Because the winds were very strong, it made it much more difficult (a good idea is to check the weather forecast before booking your reservation). We're both experienced kayakers in excellent physical shape so we took the challenge to kayak to the Mokulua Island after first going to the bird sanctuary island. We weren't too tired to load the 'yaks back on the car (expect water and sand everywhere) before the 4:30 return time (we planned on getting back by 3 to give us enough time).
Overall, we spent about 3 hours paddling and 5 hours out in the sun. Bring lots of sunscreen because the being on the water for so long (and the islands don't have any shade) can be brutal. Wearing a quick dry shirt will help. Quick dry towels are great because they're not bulky and absorb a lot of water.
We had a great time kayaking thanks to Twogood and would definitely do it again!
