We had been to the GC previously and were staying with friends in Williams. We decided to spend one day on the train in the canyon. The cost is high and the driver from Williams is not bad so if you are on a budget you may want to skip this. We chose the first class option and had excellent service including bar service. Why not drinks at 10am? The Wild West show before the ride is difficult to hear once the train pulls in behind you. Once you arrive at GC it is a fantastic walk around the South Rim. I don’t recommend the bus and lunch option unless you have mobility issues. The walk is easy and you can easily see much of the South Rim in the time you have. We walked all the way to the visitors center and back and still had time for lunch at the Bright Angel Lodge before boarding the train for return.

Train ride Is two hours and 15 minutes each direction. Scenery on the train ride is not that impressive. Once we arrived at the Grand Canyon we had about 3 1/2 hours. The busses at the Canyon are crowded so it is difficult and stressful to see the canyon on a time crunch. The Grand Canyon is less than an hours drive from Williams Arizona. I recommend driving to the canyon from Williams so that you are not on a time crunch and can enjoy the canyon as it should be enjoyed. Skip the stress of the train time crunch and your Grand Canyon trip will be much more enjoyable.

We stayed in Flagstaff and drove over to Williams to get on the railroad. There is a wild west show just before boarding which is a little juvenile but funny. The cowboys reappear on the train both to and from the Grand Canyon for some additional lighthearted fun. The car we were in wasn't fancy but did have cold water available for us to drink and a restroom. There is a food car on the train if you need to buy snacks. There is some confusion about whether the seat numbers on your ticket really are where you should sit or if you can just sit anywhere in the car. But other than that, there was lots of entertainment and great views on the way there and back. Oh, and the bonus is you get to see the Grand Canyon! We stayed there several hours before our train ride back and we could explore the south rim easily. Even did a bit of the Bright Angel trail (so we can say our heads were below the rim).
