Hamilton - An American Musical
From the creative team behind the Tony Award-winning In The Heights comes a wildly inventive new musical about the scrappy young immigrant who forever changed America: Alexander Hamilton. Tony, Grammy, Emmy Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda wields his pen and takes the stage as the unlikely founding father determined to make his mark on a new nation as hungry and ambitious as he is. From bastard orphan to Washington's right-hand man, rebel to war hero, loving husband caught in the country's first sex scandal to Treasury head who made an untrusting world believe in the American economy, Hamilton is an exploration of a political mastermind. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Eliza Hamilton, and lifelong Hamilton friend and foe, Aaron Burr, all join this revolutionary tale of America’s fiery past told through the sounds of this ever-changing nation. Tony Award nominee Thomas Kail directs this musical about taking your shot, speaking your mind, and turning the world upside down.

The NYC trip and tix for Hamilton were a xmas present for my daughter, who loves theater and dance and knows almost every word to every song in the play. I was tagging along. I get it now. If you are debating whether to go, stop debating and just go. I felt myself transported and entranced while watching. The world fell away and I loved it. We took a program and waited outside for the cast to come out to meet them and get signatures. They did not disappoint! Several of them came out and were generous with posing for pictures and giving autographs. I've never seen my daughter so happy. The seats do not give much leg room, so if your knees get achy if you can't stretch them, take something before you go (pain reliever) as you will have to sit for over 2 hours.

Broadway is a live performance mecca and is a venue for all kinds of street entertainers, especially up and coming rappers. When talking about Broadway, it is physically referring to the sector of the street located in Midtown Manhattan between 42nd and 35th streets that includes Times Square. My 1st affront on Broadway was in 1965 at the Washington Square Theatre where I saw Richard Kiley play Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha and sang a fabulous rendition of 'Impossible Dream'. Believe it or not: I got front row seats on Saturday night for twenty dollars. Now, in 2023, to get tickets to Hamilton at the Richard Rogers Theatre, I had to mortgage my house.

I enjoyed the experience but the show itself was a bit hit and miss. I really enjoyed some of the music but some was unintelligible while the rap songs are not my cup of tea. I am willing to accept that those who enjoy rap would give a higher rating but I am not one of them. Also some of the storyline left me confused. As a non-American I realise that my knowledge of Alexander Hamilton is far from expert but the play didn’t feel internally cohesive.
