At first I took the General History Walking Tour in Harlem a few days ago because I visited Harlem 10 years ago for the first time and ever since I wanted to learn more about this neighborhood. The tour was guided by Andy Owens and it was just extraordinary. I have never met a guy his age (91!) that joyful, energetic and full of knowledge of life and Harlem! The tour takes you to all the important places of the area and is accompanied by Mr Owens informative and exciting facts and stories. I liked it that much that I had to come back for another tour a few days later - the Harlem Civil Rights Walking Tour. And I did not get disappointed. The guide Neal Shoemaker was born and raised in Harlem and it was just amazing to listen to his stories. Not only was he funny and entertaining, he also gave many facts and details about the historic places and combined history with his own experiences of growing up in Harlem. In my case he did not fail to reach his goal: to make you imagine how Harlem was back in the days!

We had an amazing couple of hours walking around Harlem, using our imaginations to see the Civil Rights most iconic people and moments happening around us. Harlem as a true NY gem taught by an amazing, friendly, captivating staff, we had an amazing experience!

Had a most excellent experience with Neal Shoemaker at Harlem Heritage Tours yesterday. My group of 34 diverse teens representing youth groups from DC and Manhattan had a mpst meaningful experience learning about the Civil Rights movement and history of Harlem including: Central Park Five, Malcom X , MLK Jr and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. They had the opportunity to standi in the foot steps of history while listening to the original speeches, enjoy the music of this era and interact with people in the neighborhood - Neal knows everyone in Harlem, The teens were incredibly moved and motivated. Can't wait to see how they will use this experience to be change makers in their communities. Thank you Neal!!
