Marcus Garvey once said "A people without knowledge of its past is like a tree without roots " .It was a pleasure to spend time with Neal throughout this excellent tour . His enthusiasm, knowledge and dedication to the cultural past of Harlem and its key players shone magnificently .We got to view some of the key areas of the civil rights movement ,vividly bought to life through his captivating story telling .In an area of the City that has rapidly changed it was a privilege to have the opportunity to discuss its rich past and its impact on the present . Spike Lee, look no further , here's your man . A New York must do !

If you're thinking about book something from Harlem Heritage Tours, just read the 1 stars reviews. I read it beforehand and yet I tried to give a chance for it. What a mistake! I booked a tour for 02/05/2019, got the email confirmation, the weather was good, and the guy simply didn't show up. The office was closed. I phonned them, got voice mail and then Neil called me and gave some excuse. I was in front the building and he didn't even let me know in advance about the cancellation of the tour! We reschedule it for today, 02/07 Today I was there on time and again, the office was closed. I had to call Neil again. He arrived at 1:40pm for the 1:00pm scheduled tour and he didn't apologize, in fact he didn't even mention he was very late. Inside the office was a mess, everything thrown on the floor. Trash everywhere, opened bag of chips, used clothes on the chairs. The tour starts inside the office by Neil pointing some buildings outside. He called her "70 years old mom" to wave her hands in a high window of a building and kept telling stuff about him, trying to proof he was a raised in Harlem. Then we walked to some places where he basically pointing pictures saying "this is ____, that is ____" while reading the sentences underneath the photos. Besides being poorly prepared to provide a historical tour the guide keep receiving calls and using his celphone all the time Summing up find another agency or just do a quick research online by yourself and you will learn a lot more than spending time and money with this tour.

Hello my name is Neal Shoemaker and I was the guide for the reviewer, I want to apologize about the lateness and inconveniences experienced with the tour. We take what we do very seriously and aim to satisfy at all times, when this doesn't happen we make adjustments immediately, but I feel that this review is not totally true, there was nothing on the floor thrown around, and no used clothes on chairs, my personal jacket was the only article of clothing on any chair in the room. One call came into my phone, thats it, trash wasn't everywhere about the room, thats just not true. Sincere apologies again to the reviewer for all inconveniences, we love what we do, and as mentioned, adjustments will be made immediately to make sure visitors in the future will leave thoroughly satisfied.

I really enjoyed Neal sharing music about Harlem and the streets to accentuate the vibrant History of Harlem. I enjoyed his personal stories connecting to people and places from the neighborhood. I was happy to discover Harlem from the eyes of a local who wants to contribute to his community. i appreciated his view of gentrification and the whole Malcolm X true history.
