If you want to understand Harlem through the eyes and heart of someone with lived experience in the community, this tour is for you. Itā€™s a fun, participatory, entertaining historical to present-day experience that will move your feet, mind, and spirit. Neal ā€œMr. Harlemā€ grew up steps away from where Dr. King and Malcolm X preached and taught and where legends in entertainment performed at the Apollo Theater; he has a deep, personal understanding of how the people and places in the community have evolved over the years. Nealā€™s tours are imbued with humor, song, history and fun, and he brings forth the grit of Harlem and faces its challenges including gentrification and housing stresses head on. Nealā€™s authentic relationships with everyday citizens in the community including insiders who will get you up close and backstage at the Apollo make this tour a wonderful experience, and a terrific value. If you want to experience Harlem authentically, the HHT experience is one you wonā€™t want to miss.

The tour ran an hour over its scheduled two hours, with numerous unplanned stops, shopping, and detours along the way. Despite this, it was utterly charming and Neil is one of a kind. If you want a taste of true Harlem, this tour is for you.

I want to thank the reviewer for your attendance. We have a planned route for the tour, but if guests express particular interests, we know Harlem very well and can adopt immediately without leaving out any of the planned presentation. If I'm not mistaken, on this day, one of the kids and family wanted to see the site where the legendary Great Day in Harlem photo was taken. After receiving permission from group, I detoured to include the site, then got back on track. Sometimes when walking through Harlem, I may notice a person of importance or a community event that I know would interest my guests, so therefore quick adjustments may happen, without leaving out intended content of given tour.

This was by far one of THE most interactive, engaging and insightful tours Iā€™ve been on. There was dance, music and civil rights all intertwined with architecture and Harlem culture. It was wonderful to have a local allow us to access this great place in a way that would not have been otherwise possible.
