Not the tour you're looking for if you want a whole string of dry facts about the Harlem Renaissance and it's academic importance. Instead, the tour leader brings it all to life in a magical way, all the way down to the black music of the first half of the century which he plays out his backpack as we all walk, or maybe I should say saunter and dance, down the streets on our way from one stop to the next on the tour. He has done a lot of primary research and he reveals it quietly as background as he paints what it was like to be there when the Cotton Club was at it's prime. He even changed our route on the fly to cover the monument to the Harlem Hellfighters of WWI when he learned that a boy in our group was writing a paper on them!

A ten star review for this tour. Neal is knowledgeable, energetic and a fun guide. The two hour tour was full of facts and anecdotes. You can't find a better time spent for a Harlem tour. We had friends visiting us from out of town and they loved it as well. Neal is the best. A must activity!

Overall a good tour; the difficulty with a tour like this is in the ratio of how much historical background about Harlem in general versus the Harlem Renaissance specifically. The background was good however I already knew much of it however I can see where persons not familiar with the background would benefit from the current structure. Personally I would have liked more information on persons such as Hurston, Baldwin, etc and the influences and intellectual zeitgeist. Even though it was not exactly what I had desired I still recommend it; particularly if you are not aware of this area of history.
