November 16, 2016 I recently was privileged to participate in a “Visit Hasidim Tours” which was conducted by Frieda Vizel. I will begin my review by stating how impressed I am by Frieda’s knowledge and her professionalism. Making her tour especially effective is the fact that her knowledge comes not alone from her studies but even more from her life experience. This injects her presentation with an intimacy that nurtures an appreciation for the history and life of Hasidim. She creates a comfortable atmosphere that encourages from participants questions and comments and is always responsive to them with an ability to frame them in the larger context of Hasidim culture and customs. There is a real energy to her presentation which undoubtedly stems from what is obviously her pleasure in being able to inform and educate others about the Hasidim community and people. If you want to spend several fascinating hours in a comfortable walk through Williamsburg and really become acquainted with this historic community and people I heartily encourage you to schedule a tour with Frieda Vizel. At the conclusion of the tour you will wish it lasted for another hour or two.

What a gift to tour with Visit Hasidim. I grew up in Brooklyn and was always curious about Hasidic culture. Visit Hasidim felt like traveling to another time and place with a most captivating and informed guide–Frieda, who knows the culture from an insiders vantage. Why do married women shave their head? What are men learning about in the temple? Why does the community keep to themselves? How do they remain isolationist in the tech infused modern world? How are Chabad Hasidim different from Satmar Hasidim? What are the pressures to conform? What are the challenges of the community? What are the beautiful traditions of the Hasidic community? Why do Hasidim dress a particular way? Frieda provided answers, history and humor while walking through the community eating chocolate rugelach cookies and sampling potato kugel. She is building a bridge of understanding between Hasidim and the larger culture. Our tour included folks from all over the world. I can’t think of a more enjoyable and expansive way to experience New York.
