We are completely satisfied customers, having used this company's services for 2 walks during our vacation in the Smokies. Mike led both of our hikes and his knowledge of & love for all things outdoors couldn't have been more evident. He was a great guide! And the small waterfalls and pools hike in particular was something we couldn't have put together ourselves with weeks of research. Fabulous!

It wasn't easy choosing activities for our group of six (myself, my husband, my parents, my 8-year-old son and my 5-year-old daughter), but A Walk in the Woods was perfect. We did "Exploring Nature with Children." Cindy, our guide, was marvelous. She is a certified naturalist and a professional storyteller. Her passion for educating visitors to the mountains really shows. She knows every leaf and the song of every bird. She knew the history of the homesteaders who once inhabited and farmed the land of what is now the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. She explained how to stay safe on the trail (avoiding bears, snakes, yellow jackets, and poison ivy) which eased the fears of my very nature-phobic daughter. She described the symbiotic relationships between the plants and animals and how careful conservation efforts on the part of humans will maintain the natural balance of the forest. My son is the talkative, curious type. She patiently answered his endless questions about the park. Of particular interest were the stories about how the Cherokee were able to survive a harsh winter in the mountains when they were driven from their land by Andrew Jackson's armies during the trail of tears. I don't want to give it all away because there were so many delightful surprises during this tour. The 6 of us unanimously agreed that this was the highlight of our trip!

What an wonderful, amazing weekend!! Women in the Wilderness Backpacking 101!! You will not be disappointed. I had a life changing experience with the wonderful staff of "A Walk in the Woods" when I participated in their Women in the Wilderness weekend. Vesna and her colleagues are so professional, knowledgeable and qualified and not just lovers of the outdoor life, they are certified in all areas of leadership, the outdoors, first aid, safety, and emergency preparedness. They are experienced backpackers and naturalists who are also fantastic teachers. If you've never backpacked before this is the company for you and even if you've had some experience backpacking I guarantee you'll learn more than you can ever imagine in one weekend. Vesna took care of everything! Gear, food, permits, times, trails, all I had to do was show up. Throughout the weekend I was exposed to the history as well as the diversity of the plants and animals of the Smokey Mountain as Vesna pointed out the rare flora and fauna that an inexperienced backpacker would never have known about. Throughout the three days she gently showed us all kinds of tricks about living in the wilderness including cooking, tenting, water purification, bears, walking, hiking, backpacks, handling rising water...it was an all inclusive weekend. One of the best parts was the quiet time of just experiencing nature as we walked through the woods or sat next to a stream. I highly recommend A Walk in the Woods and I can't wait to take another trip with them. It was a great experience!!
