What To Expect
1
Banyan Drive
Our first path drives us down Banyan Drive known as the "Hilo Walk of Fame" for the banyan trees planted by celebrities, such as Babe Ruth and Franklin Roosevelt and many others. These trees have withstood several tsunamis that have devastated the town of Hilo
2
Liliuokalani Gardens
This is the largest Japanese garden outside of Japan donated by Queen LiliŹ»uokalani in 1917. Throughout the gardens are stone lanterns, gazebos, and torii gates, recalling the Japanese immigrants who came to Hawaii.
3
Rainbow Falls
breathtaking 80 ft waterfall, Rainbow Falls. These beautiful falls get their name from the rainbow that is often visible in the mist that rises as the water cascades to the rocks 80 feet below.
4
Big Island Candies
Big Island Candies was established in 1977 to manufacture and market fine quality macadamia nut candies and cookies using 100 percent Hawaii-grown macadamia nuts and Kona coffee, island eggs, real butter, and high-grade chocolate. Since its founding, Big Island Candies has continuously introduced new and imaginative products that "wow" both the eyes and taste buds of its growing legion of fans.
5
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
We will then make our way to the summit of Kilauea volcano at the Volcanoes National Park, the most highly regarded and revered volcanic area on Earth. The Park highlights two of the world's most active volcanoes--Kilauea and Mauna Loa--and offers insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and views of dramatic volcanic landscapes. At the park, you will stop at the Visitor Center, witness the spectacular collapsed caldera, steam vents, sulfur banks, and fascinating scenic lookouts. No trip to Hawaii is complete without a trip to Volcanoes National Park.
6
Nahuku - Thurston Lava Tube
We will walk through a lava tube and the guide will share information with you on how it was formed by lava. This lava tube is .4 of a mile loop trail with low lighting. Gradual stairs descending into the tube ascending stairs coming out. Not all passengers may be physically fit in which they may stay in the vehicle or outside natural scenery for this portion of the tour.
7
Richardson Beach Park
Richardson Black Sand Beach, where sea turtles are usually spotted. The Black Sand Beach is a local favorite, and is a great way to see how the ocean and volcanoes make fine black sand.

For a recent cruise stop to Hilo, Hawaii, we booked the Best of Big Island and Volcanoes National Park excursion through Vacations to Go. The destinations included Liliā€™uokalani Park and Gardens, Rainbow Falls, Mauna Loa Macadamia Factory, Orchid farm, Volcanoes National Park, and a black sand beach. The tour company was timely and picked our group up at the cruise terminal in a 16-passenger tour bus. Our tour guideā€™s name was Dreā€™, a life-long resident of the Big Island. Dreā€™ was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area and throughout the tour, he provided great narration, and interesting information about the island and its history. The bus was air conditioned, clean, and Dreā€™ offered free bottled water, granola bars, and even a battery charger that one attendee needed for her camera. Dreā€™s knowledge of the area, plants, and wildlife was extensive as we made our way to Rainbow Falls. There was a large festival taking place in the old part of town, which blocked traffic and cut-off the normal route to the falls. Dreā€™ was able to navigate a new route through the side-streets without losing much time. At the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory, we stopped at their visitor center and sampled several types of macadamia nuts. We also had the opportunity to have lunch and try the macadamia ice cream on their outdoor patio. After lunch, Dreā€™ took the group on a very informative and interactive tour of the on-site botanical garden. Next was a nice stop at the Hilo Orchid Farm where we saw beautiful varieties of orchids and had time to take numerous photos. The tour was scheduled to visit the Thurston Lava Tube near the Kilauea Volcano, which has been closed due to recent volcanic activity. Dreā€™s knowledge of the island allowed him to modify the tour and he took the group to a different lava tube on the way to Volcanoes National Park. When we got to the park, our tour started at the visitorā€™s center, where we viewed a video about the park and the recent devastating eruption. Dreā€™ used a scale model of the park and volcano to illustrate the magnitude of the latest eruption, and gave personal accounts of the event. From the visitor center, we drove to the edge of the caldera, where we took a short walk to the edge and viewed the massive crater, surrounded by steam seeping from the ground as a result of the seismic activity in the area. The weather had started to turn from fog to a light rain as we got the edge of the caldera, and Dreā€™ had rain ponchos for all who wanted one and even offered to lend out his own personal umbrella. We returned to the port after making a stop to view a group of sea turtles at one of the black sand beaches, where Dreā€™ showed the group a number of photos that he had taken during the last Kilauea eruption, and emailed them to those who requested them. All in all, it was a very enjoyable tour with a truly great guide. Thanks Dreā€™ for making our first visit to Hilo a great one!

Driver talked too much about personal stories...would have preferred more info about Hilo, the history, etc. He also spent way too much time at the city park and not enough time at the volcano NP.

This tour was just awesome. Edmond was really helpful and had a great knowledge about the island. I would highly recommend this tour. We had enough time at each stop so everyone could take pictures or walk around.
