What To Expect
1
Banyan Drive
Our first path drives us down Banyan Drive known as the "Hilo Walk of Fame" for the banyan trees planted by celebrities, such as Babe Ruth and Franklin Roosevelt and many others. These trees have withstood several tsunamis that have devastated the town of Hilo
2
Liliuokalani Gardens
This is the largest Japanese garden outside of Japan donated by Queen LiliŹ»uokalani in 1917. Throughout the gardens are stone lanterns, gazebos, and torii gates, recalling the Japanese immigrants who came to Hawaii.
3
Rainbow Falls
breathtaking 80 ft waterfall, Rainbow Falls. These beautiful falls get their name from the rainbow that is often visible in the mist that rises as the water cascades to the rocks 80 feet below.
4
Big Island Candies
Big Island Candies was established in 1977 to manufacture and market fine quality macadamia nut candies and cookies using 100 percent Hawaii-grown macadamia nuts and Kona coffee, island eggs, real butter, and high-grade chocolate. Since its founding, Big Island Candies has continuously introduced new and imaginative products that "wow" both the eyes and taste buds of its growing legion of fans.
5
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
We will then make our way to the summit of Kilauea volcano at the Volcanoes National Park, the most highly regarded and revered volcanic area on Earth. The Park highlights two of the world's most active volcanoes--Kilauea and Mauna Loa--and offers insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and views of dramatic volcanic landscapes. At the park, you will stop at the Visitor Center, witness the spectacular collapsed caldera, steam vents, sulfur banks, and fascinating scenic lookouts. No trip to Hawaii is complete without a trip to Volcanoes National Park.
6
Nahuku - Thurston Lava Tube
We will walk through a lava tube and the guide will share information with you on how it was formed by lava. This lava tube is .4 of a mile loop trail with low lighting. Gradual stairs descending into the tube ascending stairs coming out. Not all passengers may be physically fit in which they may stay in the vehicle or outside natural scenery for this portion of the tour.
7
Richardson Beach Park
Richardson Black Sand Beach, where sea turtles are usually spotted. The Black Sand Beach is a local favorite, and is a great way to see how the ocean and volcanoes make fine black sand.

Dre was our driver and guide in a 16 seater bus. He was informative, engaging and entertaining. We saw many places but the highlight was seeing the Kilauea crater and steam vents. Unfortunately the lava tube was closed for safety reasons but Dre made sure we saw everything we could. The final visit to the beach where we saw two large green turtles basking on the rocks was the icing on the cake. Just a word of caution, make sure you get to go in a small bus, there was one group of 12 that left in a van with three seats to a row which was claustrophobic and meant not everyone could sit next to their partner.

Aloha Carr44, thank you for the excellent review and so glad you were able to Join us off the Emarld Princess cruise line. We are always excited to have the Sea turtles show an appearance at the black sand beach and as you said, really adds icing to the cake. Thank you again.

Highlight of the tour was the Volcano National Park. Saw the steam vents and lava field, which is cool. We didn't get to see turtles or the cave (as shown on the listing page), both of which I wanted to do. Instead we went to the nut and candy factories which wasted our time. Nothing there just a gift shop like in the airports. Rainbow falls is nice, but a bit far to get a very nice view. Guide Steve was funny.

Aloha and thank you for the review. Not sure when you booked this but no one is allowed to enter into the lava tube since the last eruption. We often see the Sea turtles in Hilo but its not guaranteed as they are wild.

We booked the Volcano National Park tour with Big C before we went to Hawaii and boarded the NCL Pride Of America. It was a good tour for $99 each and cheaper than the cruise ship tour, same tour. We had no problem finding our guide he was waiting for us in the debarkation building after we walked off the ship. We went a lot of places including candy and nut factories, flower greenhouses, and he was knowledgeable about the island and recent volcano activity. He took us to Volcano House which is a lodge directly across from the National Park Visitors center and has an outstanding view of lava fields. We saw steam vents up close but no flowing lava. Some vantage points and access roads are closed because of unstable road beds. We did not walk through the Thurston tunnel it is closed. I don't remember a Rainbow falls but we may have passed it. These tours are very fast you get a pretty good overview of the area in 6 hours. You could rent a car for half the price for 2 people but you would have to drive and you wouldn't get the interesting narrative. Not a bad deal all -in-all very satisfied.

Aloha Steve, thank you for your review. Yes this tour includes many stops and sights to see since your cruise ship is in Hilo for a short amount of time. We always include Rainbow Falls... it was that 80ft waterfall you stopped at.
