My wife and I spent a great June 4 morning with Capt. Joardan Savland of Hoonah Whale Tours on his Thor Too, a small, but solidly seaworthy 31-foot catamaran powered by a pair of monster 300 hp Yamaha outboards. The tour takes a maximum of six, so there's no mob mentality on board. Joardan knows the waters and is respectful of whales and the environment, not crowding the beasts of the deep that are his tour's bread and butter. We saw whales bubble netting and feeding, breeching, etc. Only wish the tour was twice as long. This is a small, family-run operation and couldn't be friendlier. Call Maraiya Savland ---she bakes the tour's signature blueberry muffins, wrangles the couple's three kids and manages bookings---and get ready for a great, and memorable tour. Photographers: lenses between 100mm to 300mm recommended. The boat has a cozy cabin in the event of foul weather, as well as a "head" for personal emergencies. Ross and Karen Dolan, South Dakota

This small outfit was just the right fit for my sister and myself! We were so impressed with Mariyah and Joardan! Mariyah was waiting for us as we arrived on Hoonah, (...walk through the big red barn and follow the path to excursions!!) and took us on a short drive to the marina. She shared information about the town and even drove us to the eagle's nest in front of their home! Upon arrival, we loaded up with another family in Joardan's boat and off we went. Mariyah had hot chocolate, coffee and muffins waiting on the boat for and we were free to walk to about as we headed out. Joardan found a whale fairly quickly, but the area was crowded with other boats and the whale was not exactly cooperating. He took us out further and we were delighted to find sea lions, otters, a harp seal and then the big deal....WHALES!!! The most amazing thing was the sounds. The still waters when the boat stopped were so calm that we would hear the whale clearing his blowhole and then see him. Several times we were also surprised to hear the clear music of the whales as they apparently passed beneath our boats. It was so beautiful. Joardan lingered there to let us experience several whales and they just got closer and closer. It was a once in a lifetime trip and worth every penny. Bring some cash - you are gonna want to tip!!!

From the very beginning to booking our tour online Hoonah Whale Watching was an absolute pleasure to deal with. His tours are smaller so no big crowds or fighting to find a spot to get a picture. We not only spotted whales, he found us some seals, otters and eagles. It was a wonderful afternoon on the water. This was our favorite tour we did in Alaska and the one we can not stop talking about.
