Hoonah Whale Tours is a family owned whale watching company that operates out of Hoonah, AK. When taking this tour you will be on a private 6 passenger boat tour that goes out into Icy Strait. During the tour will you get the chance to see all sorts of Southeast Alaska wildlife, including bald eagles, sea lions, sea otters, sometimes brown bear and orcas and of course humpback whales! Our tours last between 3 and 3.5 hours and we guarantee you'll see whales or you money back. The boat is a 6 passenger catamaran, with a walk around deck, heated cabin, and a bathroom on board. We also provide snacks and beverages.

When out on our whale watching tour you will be in Icy Strait (body of water) You will get to see humpback whales (guaranteed!), sea lion, sea otter, and bald eagles. You even have the chance of seeing brown bear along the beaches, orcas and puffins flying by.

This family run tour group was awesome. Maraiya drove the six of us "ladies" to the boat with fresh blueberry muffins, coffee and hot chocolate in hand. Jordan was an awesome host and we saw everything from sea lions to sea otters (including mama and baby) and close up WHALE shots including two Orka whales and a very big humpback. This was one of the highlights of our Alaskan adventure because of this great start in Icy Straits with Maraiya and Jordan. Definitely recommend them if you are looking for a great Whale watching experience in Icy Straits. Thanks guys!!

I can't recommend highly enough to take this tour out of Icy Straits. I looked at booking a larger whale watching tour through the cruise line, but decided to book Hoonah Whale Tours instead. And I am SO Glad I did. We spoke to other passengers who took the larger ships sponsored by the cruise line, and they didn't see anything like we saw and they were on a tour at the exact same time. There are a max of only 6 people on the Hoonah Whale Tour. You can comfortably walk all around the boat so everyone has a close-up of any animals since all 6 can fit on any side. We saw a pod of Orcas, that we watched for about an hour. Two of them swam directly under the boat so you know how close we actually were. We saw a family of sea otters just floating in the water as well as seals and porpoises. We also saw Humpback whales Bubble Feeding several times which was amazing to witness. The tour was for 3.5 hours, and my only regret is that I didn't book back to back tours so I could have stayed on the water for 7 hours. Jordan and Mariah were very friendly and knowledgeable. We had beautifully sunny weather, but if it was cold and rainy the boat fit 6 inside the cabin comfortably. When we discussed our experience with other passengers, most of them just saw a few humpback whales swimming and they didn't see them bubble feeding. Jordan was working with several other local boats which means they will definitely find the whales. The best advice I can give, is book this excursion early since it will fill up. There aren't a ton of small local boats giving the whale watching tour, and you will not be disappointed you took this excursion. Keep in mind, there isn't a ton to do in Icy Straits so I would definitely go on a whale watching tour in this port.

We are a family of six adults cruising with Disney and booked most of our excursions directly for a more personalized experience. Mariah picked us up right on the dock and drove us directly to the tour boat where Jordan was ready and waiting. We had the boat to ourselves for a peaceful pleasant ride. The HUGE advantage of being on a small boat is its maneuverability and agility, enabling us to quietly get very close to the whales. It was so still we could hear the whales exhale and passengers on the other boats talking. Unfortunately didn't see any orcas (too early for salmon so too early for a lot of the predators too) but saw plenty of humpback whales, sea otters, and sea lions. The blueberry muffins are indeed as good as everyone has posted (Alaskan blueberries, who knew?). Best wishes for success to this nice young couple and their family! Well done tour.
