Hoonah Whale Tours is a family owned whale watching company that operates out of Hoonah, AK. When taking this tour you will be on a private 6 passenger boat tour that goes out into Icy Strait. During the tour will you get the chance to see all sorts of Southeast Alaska wildlife, including bald eagles, sea lions, sea otters, sometimes brown bear and orcas and of course humpback whales! Our tours last between 3 and 3.5 hours and we guarantee you'll see whales or you money back. The boat is a 6 passenger catamaran, with a walk around deck, heated cabin, and a bathroom on board. We also provide snacks and beverages.

What To Expect

Hoonah Whale Tours

When out on our whale watching tour you will be in Icy Strait (body of water) You will get to see humpback whales (guaranteed!), sea lion, sea otter, and bald eagles. You even have the chance of seeing brown bear along the beaches, orcas and puffins flying by.

We were a group of six on a cruise and we wanted to whale watch on a boat with less people than the boats being offered through the cruise excursions. We found this company and had a great experience. We had the boat to ourselves. We loved that as we were able to move around easily based on where the whales were. This company is run by a local family and Captain Jordan was very knowledgeable in knowing where to see the whales the best. He also slowed the boat down at one point so we could watch a sea otter! We are so happy we chose a local company. One thing that did surprise us was how quiet Captain Jordan was. He was very friendly, but you had to ask the questions to learn about the area or know what we were looking at. Having a more boisterous or charismatic person leading with information would have made the tour even more top-notch.

Captain Jordan and Mariah provide a personal and intimate experience that the large tour companies can’t match. If you want to experience the beauty of Hoonah with a small group make sure to book with Hoonah Whale Tours. You will get personal attention and have full access to their comfortable vessel. The homemade snacks are an extra bonus. 5 stars plus!

My family had an amazing time with Captain Jordan on his 6person vessel. His wife Mariah picked us up from the cruise port and drove us right up to the boat dock where coffee, hot chocolate, and muffins were waiting! Quick and efficient drive out to see Humpbacks which were spotted and up close alongside otters and eagles. We were fortunate enough to even run along a pod of Orcas which made the tri] even more amazing! Captain Jordan was knowledgeable and professional. Full 3hrs and so worth the money than being on a large boat with 30+ people. 10/10 Recommend!
