What To Expect

Black Hills National Forest

Once the balloon is ready, you’ll gently take to the skies for an approximate 1-hour flight over the Black Hills National Forest. If you are new to ballooning, you’ll be surprised at the silence and serenity you’ll find high above the treetops. It’s truly magical. Upon landing, the ground crew will pack the balloon while you and your pilot celebrate the flight with complimentary champagne, light snacks and a story about the origin of hot air ballooning. Flights depart at sunrise and are weather dependent and always at the discretion of your experienced pilot.

For a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.

We went in late June as a family of four (our kids are 14 and 11) for our first balloon experience . I was a little nervous beforehand, since I am prone to motion sickness, but the ride was so gentle I couldn't even feel the takeoff, and was surprised to see the ground dropping away. Beautiful scenery on a soft, gentle ride over Custer and the park. It was a little chilly (in the high forties that early in the morning) but the heat from the burner kept us very warm. Damian and his crew were friendly and fun, with jokes or stories. I would recommend hiking boots or waterproof shoes in case on landing you need to hop out in wet grass. Over all, a great experience that the whole family enjoyed!

We chose to fly with Black Hills Balloons as a 'celebration of life' experience after burying both of my parents. It was the perfect choice - a transcendent experience - transcending the bonds of gravity and transcending the bonds of every day life. Our pilot (and company owner) Damien, made it a life affirming, happy experience. His area knowledge and experience, combined with his genial, pun-loving personality and his amazing crew, made it an unforgettable experience for us. Family with a teenager-one of the most amazing family experiences we have ever had. The balloon ride was an fantastic experience even our teenager thought so! Damian and his crew were professional and very amiable. The views were beautiful. The ride was so smooth as we glided over the landscape taking in the sunrise. You don’t feel movement and instead feel serenity in the quiet landscape before you. I would highly recommend as a must do experience. For the record I usually am sensitive to motion, but did NOT get motion sickness. The post ride celebration was really fun and allowed us to interact more with the staff. The balloon ride was truly one of the highlights of our trip.
