What To Expect

Black Hills National Forest

Once the balloon is ready, you’ll gently take to the skies for an approximate 1-hour flight over the Black Hills National Forest. If you are new to ballooning, you’ll be surprised at the silence and serenity you’ll find high above the treetops. It’s truly magical. Upon landing, the ground crew will pack the balloon while you and your pilot celebrate the flight with complimentary champagne, light snacks and a story about the origin of hot air ballooning. Flights depart at sunrise and are weather dependent and always at the discretion of your experienced pilot.

We set this ride up for the first part of our trip to the Black Hills as we would still be on east coast time and the 5:30 a.m. meeting time would easier. The only thing wrong with this tactic was this balloon ride set set the bar so high that everything else we did in the area dimmed in comparison. The pilot and crew were very professional, but at the same time they were personable and entertaining. The pilot, Damien, patiently answered questions - I learned so much! My husband and I both agreed that Damien’s sense of humor and storytelling really pushed the flight from “a great ride” to “an amazing experience”. The take off and landing were gentle and I never felt uncomfortable, scared, or even apprehensive. The champagne toast at the end was very memorable - once again due to Damien’s storytelling, including a history of ballooning, and then the very touching toast. (I think his Irish accent added to the ambience.) We entered the balloon a group of strangers and we exited the balloon with new friends! I can’t say enough good things about this attraction - don’t be afraid, just try it! You won’t be disappointed!

Thank you Black Hill Balloons for helping cross off a bucket list item. It was OUTSTANDING!!! Take off and landing were smooth and the after flight party was fun. This was a great way to start a July morning in the Black Hills. It was a wonderful view of the elk running below us while floating above Custer State Park. It is an adventure that should be taken by all who visit the Black Hills near Custer.

One word...AWESOME! Whether this is your first time or you’ve flown before, I highly recommend you take this flight. It was a beautiful clear morning and we saw lots of wildlife. Damien (our knowledgeable and funny Irish pilot) made this flight very enjoyable. We flew for about an hour, 9 miles across the park. Afterwards we got a bit of history about ballooning while enjoying mimosas with cheese & crackers. It was truly a memorable experience.
