We booked this because of the excellent reviews on Trip Advisor. Unfortunately, we were disappointed with the professionalism of both the captain (Gabe) and the “naturalist” (Regina). We did see whales, so I gave the trip two stars. However, here are a few examples of why we were not impressed.
When we saw the first whale, we were sitting behind the captain and he said to open our windows to get a better view. My window, however, was shared with the captain and was like a sliding door (sideways). I opened my window to get a picture when Gabe pulled out a big camera and pushed the window open on his side (which left my side open about 4 inches), turned to me and said, “that’s all you get,” and proceeded to click away with his own camera.
Gabe would race to each destination and brag that he would “sneak up” on the bigger boats (Gastinau Guiding). My travel partner tried to engage him in dialog about what we were seeing, but he simply answered yes and no, with no elaboration.
Regina did the best she could, but was NOT a trained naturalist. No degree or any kind of training. She even said to us at the end of the tour that she has considered taking a tour on some of the competitors’ vessels so she could listen to their naturalists because, as she said, “I think my stuff is right, but I’d like to know what they say.”
After having taken other tours with naturalists in the past, I can attest that they all do their homework, are prepared, and are knowledgeable. On this trip however, Regina was a naturalist in name only.
For $145 per person, plus tax and gratuities, we were out a substantial amount of money for a sub-par tour.
