Kealakekua Bay Snorkel

Overview
Enjoy a morning on the water on this small boat cruise as we cruise south down the Kona Coast to the pristine Kealakekua Ba keeping our eyes open for large pelagic animals. Enjoy snorkeling in this bay which is often a resting place for the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins and home to many of Hawaii's endemic fish. We will explore the sea caves and lava tubs from old lava flows on the way home.

If you get the chance to get out into this bay to snorkel, do it. You have to go on an organized tour boat, kayak and stay attached to your kayak, or hike down/up a steep path to do so. I'd been a few times before but this was the most clear and saw the most diversity in fish. We were a small group and were given plenty of time in the water which was terrific. The boat ride in the rigid inflatable was fun and fast. Saw spinner dolphins on the way out and back. Pat, the captain, was skilled and helpful. Jillian the guide, showed less attentiveness. There is a fine line between being overly enthusiastic as a guide and appearing disinterested in your customers experience. Jillian, to us, leaned towards the disinterested. I would still recommend Kona Snorkel Trips however as it may have been an off day for her.

Everyone was super friendly and knowledgeable, couldn’t have asked for a better trip. We even booked the manta ray trip because we had such a good time on the day trip.

This experience was one of the best things we did on the Big Island. Shari was a great guide and very attentive, and Charlie the boat driver did a great job getting us to and from Kealakekua Bay. They even stopped and let us see some spinner dolphins. Looking forward to going back someday soon and doing the nighttime Manta snorkel. If you want the best snorkel experience on the Big Island I highly recommend Kona Snorkel Trips.
