What To Expect
1
Kenai Fjords National Park
In Kenai Fjords National Park, over half of the landmass is covered by the enormous Harding Icefield, a thousand-foot block of ice that dates back to the last Ice Age. The Harding spills out in all directions in the form of glaciers. Some stretch northwest into rugged hills of the Kenai Peninsula. Others—five of them, to be exact—reach as far as the sea along the craggy coast of the Gulf of Alaska.
2
Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge
Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge is comprised of 2,400 islands, headlands, rocks, islets, spires and reefs and is known for its abundance of seabirds.

Our family of 4 (my wife, self, 2 teen boys) took this trip on 1 of our 2 days in Seward. It is a 'must do' from my perspective as you get to see amazing wildlife, the beautiful coastline of Resurrection Bay, and a glacier (captian's choice based on day). I researched many of the different cruise options and decided on this one based on the: 1. duration - 5-6 hours provided more time to see wildlife, see a glacier, and enjoy the scenic views. 2. sites visited - some shorter trips only stay in Resurrection Bay and don't get to a glacier/ the Natl park. 3. the simple lunch (chicken wrap and chips) that was included - as some trips for more $ offer a buffet but we didn't want to spend our time inside eating a big meal but figured we'd get hungry. (Note: we brought snacks on board as well.) (Note: we also bought a refillable souvenir mug that was well worth it!)

There was no allocated seating so we had the choice to sit below, above our outside. After the safety procedures we were soon on our way, sailing out of Seward Harbour in Resurrection Bay. We had heard that it rains a lot in Seward, so we were super excited that it was a beautiful clear day, although still cold. It wasn't long before we spotted humpback whales splashing about, and then came the sea otters floating about on their backs. The scenery was magical. Tall shale mountains covered with pine trees, little islands, snow-capped mountains, the trip had it all. There were seals swimming about and some relaxing in the sun on rocks. Some of the cliffs were covered with birds, and puffins were diving for fish. We even spotted a bald eagle sitting in a tree. We passed glaciers, and then stopped at Holgate glacier in Holgate Arm, Aialik Bay. Although said to be one of the smaller glaciers, as the boat got up really close, we could see just how tall it was. It is a tidewater glacier, so that means that it calves, dropping large chunks of ice into the water. Unfortunately, it only calved a little on our tour. This was a great tour and included in our ticket price was lunch, a fresh chicken wrap, potato chips and canola bar which was really delicious, and there was the option for buy drinks and snacks. Just before we arrived back at Seward Harbour we were give a fresh baked chocolate chip cookie, still warm and gooey and super delicious. This is a must do tour if you are like us, travelling independently, or doing a cruise. We usually don't see much wildlife when we travel, so we were really happy that this tour had it all.

We thoroughly enjoyed this cruise, delighting in seeing orcas and humpback whales, harbor seals, sea lions, sea otters and even puffins! What a treat! And hearing the glacier thunder, crack and splash ice into the river was very special. The crew under Captain Steve on the Callisto Voyager was great -- all helpful and eager to serve. We would definitely do this again. Just an all-around wonderful experience.
