What To Expect
1
Kenai Fjords National Park
In Kenai Fjords National Park, over half of the landmass is covered by the enormous Harding Icefield, a thousand-foot block of ice that dates back to the last Ice Age. The Harding spills out in all directions in the form of glaciers. Some stretch northwest into rugged hills of the Kenai Peninsula. Others—five of them, to be exact—reach as far as the sea along the craggy coast of the Gulf of Alaska.
2
Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge
Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge is comprised of 2,400 islands, headlands, rocks, islets, spires and reefs and is known for its abundance of seabirds.

We booked our 6 hour cruise through Alaska Railroad; it was billed as "Cruise effortlessly through the tranquil waters of the Kenai Fjord". Nothing could have been further from the truth, Prior to boarding, we were NOT advised of the sea conditions and to make matters MUCH worse, the crew fed all passengers a lunch of chicken or veggie wraps on large cold tortillas prior to launch. Within 30 minutes of sail, the crew was running about the boat gloved, carrying barf bags; other crew members were pouring cups of ginger ale. Nearly half of the boat was in distress. I found the movement terrifying and my husband and I both became ill. When my adult daughter asked a crew memeber how long the choppiness would last, he replied, "This is nothing, it's only 15 feet, tommow will be 17 feet! The trip was miserable, my husband was sick all night. The tour company should honestly disclose the sea conditions AND DEFINITELY NOT FEED the passengers prior to lauch; this was just cruel.

Jumped out of bed early to catch our boat and stood around on the dock watching the sea otters while we waited to board. We enjoyed ourselves immensely - the ship was pleasant, clean and staff wonderfully approachable and pleasant. Our captain (Sherry ?) drove us to see EVERYTHING. She positioned the boat amazingly close to things & we saw whales, otters, porpoise, PUFFINS in full glory, endless birds, glaciers and icebergs, waterfalls, etc, etc. etc. We spend most of our time on the railing with the camera. Chilly, blowy and damp BUT happy, happy, happy.
