What To Expect
1
Kenai Fjords National Park
In Kenai Fjords National Park, over half of the landmass is covered by the enormous Harding Icefield, a thousand-foot block of ice that dates back to the last Ice Age. The Harding spills out in all directions in the form of glaciers. Some stretch northwest into rugged hills of the Kenai Peninsula. Others—five of them, to be exact—reach as far as the sea along the craggy coast of the Gulf of Alaska.
2
Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge
Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge is comprised of 2,400 islands, headlands, rocks, islets, spires and reefs and is known for its abundance of seabirds.

My wife, two kids and I enjoyed the 7.5 hour Kenai Fjords Cruise. In addition to amazing scenery including two glaciers, we saw plenty of wildlife -- seven whales, a dozen sea lions, sea otters, eagles and puffins. The boat was full and was a bit crowded, but not too bad. The national park ranger on the cruise was friendly and knowledgeable and narrated much of the cruise with interesting information. The rest of the crew also were friendly and, although they were working hard, seemed to enjoy their jobs. We purchased the all-you-can eat salmon and prime rib lunch, which was decent. Bring warm clothes. It was in the mid-70s at the harbor, but a good 15-20 degrees cooler on the water. I posted two videos from our trip on You Tube. You can find them by running a search for "PiroOne Kenai."

Our boat captained by Capt. Mike was fortunate enough to see whale bubble feeding 3 times, transient killer whales cruising and numerous sea lions stretched out on the rocks. Columbia Glacier was breathtaking and hearing it calf was something I'll never forget. Capt. Mike and the crew were friendly, helpful, informative and anxious to supply our every need.

Positives: The cruise was incredible. We went on a rare sunny day and the water was calm, so that was a win. We saw tons of animals, including humpback whales, otters, seals, puffins, sea lions, dall's porpoises. The view of the fjords was also spectacular. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Alaska. Negatives: The staff made you feel like you were just another number in their super busy day. We had an 11:30 tour scheduled, but when we arrived at 11:00, they told us not only that we had to move our car to a lot where a shuttle would bring us back, but that also our boat would be leaving AT 11:15 and to not miss it. We got the car parked and shuttled back, and I quickly tried to use the bathroom, but a worker told my husband that we need to hurry because our boat was leaving NOW and so I wasn't able to use the bathroom. My husband said that we had booked an 11:30 boat so why were we being pushed to 11:15, and they said because we arrived early (???), they put us on an earlier boat, which they never asked if we wanted. I would definitely change this policy if I were them. The staff on the boat weren't much better. The captain was asking some people at the front of the boat to hold on to the rail or something, and for whatever reason, had to ask again over the intercom, and said "apparently they don't speak English". He may have had no bad intentions, but it came across terribly. The whole crew just wasn't personable. I would definitely recommend this cruise to out of town guests, but I hope that the crew and staff know that they are in the service industry, and it wouldn't hurt to try a bit more with the guests.
