What To Expect
1
Kenai Fjords National Park
In Kenai Fjords National Park, over half of the landmass is covered by the enormous Harding Icefield, a thousand-foot block of ice that dates back to the last Ice Age. The Harding spills out in all directions in the form of glaciers. Some stretch northwest into rugged hills of the Kenai Peninsula. Others—five of them, to be exact—reach as far as the sea along the craggy coast of the Gulf of Alaska.
2
Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge
Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge is comprised of 2,400 islands, headlands, rocks, islets, spires and reefs and is known for its abundance of seabirds.

What a fantastic day cruising the Kenai Fjords. Not only did we see the spectacular Aialik glacier, but we saw Orca whales, Humpback whales, Tufted and Horned Puffins, Bald Eagles, Sea otters, harbor seals, Steller sea lions and more! As a photography buff it really gave me an opportunity to use my Canon 90D camera and rented 100-400 mm zoom lens! The photos are awesome, but do not capture the beauty of being there in person.

This tour was well worth the price in my opinion. The experience can be very dependent on the time of year and the weather. The weather was great when we left Seward but the staff did warn us that the weather can change quickly and their staff is well trained to deal with sea sickness. I am not prone to motion sickness but it has been hit or miss for me on previous Caribbean cruises so I pre-medicated just in case. On our way to the National Park, the captain spotted a research vessel and was able to find a pod of killer whales which was amazing. We were able to see several fairly close up and was one of the highlights of the day. She did her best to keep the boat as stable as possible but the seas got a little choppy in the open water. As we made our way to the glaciers, the clouds moved in and we started to get some rain. If the boat is able to make it over to Kenai Fjords, the glaciers are amazing up close. The staff may even have some signs for photos (holiday card anyone?). We were able to see several glaciers up close and some amazing scenery in Resurrection Bay. Some rougher weather moved in on our way back to Seward so we weren't able to spend much time outside. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful throughout the cruise. If you are prone to motion sickness, talk to the staff on shore before getting on the boat because it could be pretty miserable if you spend 4-6 hours feeling nauseous. None of our group experienced this but there were a few people on board that were having issues with this. Overall a great way to see Kenai Fjords National Park!
