LA Food Tour: Exploring America’s Culinary Frontier w/ Culinary Backstreets

Overview
Nobody walks in LA? Prepare to challenge your expectations and preconceptions as we wind our way through Downtown Los Angeles on foot. The City of Angels is vast and sprawling, to be sure, a world city and global hub that boasts the busiest port in the western hemisphere and a local economy rivaled only by New York and Tokyo. Yet strolling through its dense core, where it all began hundreds of years ago alongside the LA River, Los Angeles still feels like a western outpost – forward looking, experimental, and adventuresome, especially when it comes to eating. Our food journey may seem extensive, but it’s truly only a taste of the banquet laid out for the bold, the curious, and the intrepid as they continue to explore the seemingly boundaryless City of Angels.

My partner and I are relatively new locals to the city and absolutely relished this tour as a way to get to know the history, community, and amazing food in the area much more intimately, and we could not recommend more to others wishing to do the same! We were blown away by the background and education of our guide, Ulysses, who integrated his knowledge and connection to the city as a native of LA, local filmmaker, and current grad student of sociocultural anthropology. Between his unique perspective and the clear amount of thought, research, and community involvement that goes into the agenda, the tour far exceeded any other food tour we've experienced elsewhere, and we thought a very worthy use of our money. We already cannot wait to find other Culinary Backstreets experiences wherever we go!

Thank you so much for the thoughtful review. Ulysses is wonderful! We take pride in working with people like him who are very knowledgeable about and extremely fond of the cities they live in and work hard to preserve its social and cultural fabric. Check out your Culinary Backstreets Passport on our website to see the stamps you have collected. We hope to see you again soon in one of our cities.

Guide Ethan has put together an incredible exploration of the myriad cultures and histories that have created one of the world’s most exciting cities, punctuated by amazing food and fascinating context. We have toured with Culinary Backstreets in Lisbon and Mexico City, and this eye-opening day was just as thrilling—and I am a native Angeleno! Can’t say enough good things about this tour. Put on your walking shoes (you will be hitting the pavement for about four miles) and come hungry and open-minded. Plenty of air and space for Covid safety.
