Mild to Wild Rafting and Jeep Tours
Discover the spectacular La Plata Canyon (20 minutes West of Durango) and its beautiful U formation created by glaciers on one of our Colorado jeep tours. Several small waterfalls and cascading rivers follow the rugged jeep trails in the springtime along with lots of wildlife such as marmots, mule deer, elk herds, juncos, kingfishers, turkey vultures, red-tailed hawks and bald eagles. On our guided jeep tours you will see numerous wildflowers, high-alpine meadows, and avalanche gullies. Following the La Plata River (meaning “Silver” in Spanish) to La Plata City, an old mining town established in 1875, you’ll discover the remnants of old mining claims. These include a tall intact chimney left from the crew quarters, the framework of old cabins, and tailing piles from actual mining areas. Then, you’ll continue to the peak of Kennebec Pass at 12,000 feet above sea level (also above tree-line).

We had an excellent tour riding the trail along the La Plata river from about 8,000' to 10,000'. We took the 9AM half-day tour and were very glad we did. The temps were chilly to start and our excellent guide, Jay, set us up with warm blankets and lots of great stories and facts about Durango. The fall scenery was gorgeous ... bright yellow Aspen, azure blue skies, green and blue spruce trees, ponderosa pine, and rushing river. The ride was not terribly bumpy and we felt completely safe and secure. It was not a thrill ride, nor was it meant to be. Just a great opportunity to be outside, enjoy the natural beauty, and learn a little bit from a guide that had lived and experienced Durango for most of his adult life.

Awesome scenic views, especially as the fall changing colors of the aspens were in full effect in La Plata Canyon. Lots of waterfalls and snow covered peaks to view. Our "maestro de tour" Tosh, and yes that's his real name, was totally outstanding. He took excellent care of our disabled family member. Kudos to you Tosh!! Tosh made sure to tell the history and give us the chance to take photos whenever we wanted. Already plan a new trip to Durango next summer will make sure we do another adventure with Tosh and n we Highly recommend Mild to Wild!!

It rained and was overcast on this tour. Most of our friends paid a booking fee to postpone but we decided to go. It was cold and wet but heavy coats were offered and helped. Tosh, our guide, was personable and knowledgeable about the history and plant life. Hence, the tour was great. Our friends who went day’s later in better weather but with a different guide did not learn as much or have as good a time.
