Adventures on the Gorge
Meet your rafting trip leader at the departure point. You will listen to a brief orientation and get your gear (personal flotation device, helmet and paddle). Then, you will have a 30-minute ride on a school bus down to the river put-in. Your guide will go over additional instructions once you get in the raft. The trip begins with a few smaller class I-III rapids as you ease into paddling and working as a team. Then, you hit some bigger rapids rated class IV-V. About half way through the trip, your trip will pull over and eat a deli-style lunch on the shore. After lunch, you will continue downstream into the heart of the Gorge. Here you’ll go through several rapids rated class III-V.  Between rapids, there is time for swimming, floating and maybe (based on water levels) jumping off of rocks. The trip ends just past the New River Gorge Bridge.

We had Leanna Canyon as our raft guide and she was awesome! Super funny and personable! We (two girls in our 20s) went with our dad who is in his 50s on the half day rafting trip and had the best time! Both of us had gone on rafting trips before but this one was way better than any we had been on previously! Our guide made it safe and fun and we would definitely like to do it again!! I would suggest the half day trip for those who maybe have never been because it’s a great way to get an exciting experience!

We had an amazing time rafting here! Ark was our group leader and our guide down the river. He was absolutely amazing and made sure everyone was safe and having fun! We had an exciting and fun time rafting! Thanks Ark for making it a wonderful experience! The picnic lunch really hit the spot and broke up the trip. There were also opportunities to go down a rapid outside of the boat, to float along the river and they stopped to allow time to jump off a rock high above the river. We especially appreciated the beverages on the way back after the 6 hour trek! Also, Matt did a great job with the video. Pictures cost 65 for all images digitally and the video was 45. We have done tons of adventures and that is very reasonable prices for pictures and video. Overall, we would definitely recommend this adventure (if you are physically able as it is highly intense)! Also, we stayed in a cabin that was very nice!

This was my first time whitewater rafting (the website says good for experienced and beginners alike, so I figured I was fine). I'm pretty high anxiety, so I probably should have done something to warm up to this, but the other two beginners on my raft both had a blast. I was super fortunate to end up with Zach as my guide in the boat - he basically has his PhD in rafting and did a good job balancing fun and safety. The three of us in back all almost got sucked off the boat early on in a Class IV and he grabbed me and my husband and pushed us back in the raft before we could fall out. I was also fortunate to have 3 people on my raft that had done serious WWR before (Grand Canyon, Gauley) and they were in front. Everyone on our raft was young and physically fit. It allowed us to do a bunch of cool things. There were groups that had skinny, young kids and they didn't help with the paddling too much. Things I wish I had known - you are probably going to pop into the water and swim two of the rapids, but you don't have to if you don't want to. I did the first one and it was terrifying but it also forces you to sort of feel OK about falling out. Wear either water shoes or Teva-type velcro sandals and if you have glasses or sunglasses, pick up one of the straps in the shop before you go. They have huge changing room/shower facilities so plan on bringing a full change of clothes. They have a photographer in a kayak taking pictures the whole time. The pictures are $25 each (less if you buy more) or $32 for a flash drive with a picture on it and maybe $65 for all the pictures? The pictures are expensive, but very high quality. You can request guides. I would request either Zach or Sam. You take a bus to and from the drop in and there is a latrine (no running water) before you get in the raft. You get water, pop, or beer for the ride back.
