Luau Kalamaku with Buffet Dinner & Show

Overview
Welcoming guests to Kauai since 2007, Luau Kalamaku is Hawaii's only luau show performed “in-the-round,” offering optimal views of the stage. Witness the unearthing of the pig from the traditional imu (underground oven) and enjoy a hula lesson. A craft fair featuring unique items by local artisans awaits on the sprawling lawn. Feast on a delicious buffet of local and familiar favorites and enjoy a Mai Tai from the open bar. The 45-minute main show tells the amazing story of the ancient Hawaiian legend of Kalamaku “child of the new land." Through laughter, fear, seduction and fire, a new legacy is created, born from the cherished seeds of their ancestors. The theatrical luau show culminates with a fantastic fire dream featuring fire poi balls and traditional fire knife dancing.

I write this review with mixed feelings. The show associated with the luau was very entertaining and had a Broadway-like quality. I wish I could say the same for buffet, but it was terrible. Nothing more to say about the food. The two free drinks were made with the cheapest alcohol and mixers and were just way too sweet. Just go for the show and if you want some alcohol just grab the local beer that they have on tap.

We attended the luau as part of a big group. The show was spectacular....one of the best luau shows I've attended. The buffet provided a lot of variety for varied diets.

I suppose everyone thinks of a Luau as being a moderate event that you would share with say 30 - 50 other guests. If that is what you envisage then the Kalamaku Luau is probably not the one for you. Please also note that if your resort is on the north shore of the island you will need to allow an hour each way to get to the event. When you arrive at the property you first notice the huge car park full of cars and buses that have conveyed hundreds of people to the event. Whilst there was ample parking, it did take us more than 20 minutes to exit the car park as the exit is controlled by traffic lights at the main highway. Once you arrive at the venue you are greeted by friendly staff who assign you your seats. You are then encouraged to have a drink from the bar and visit the numerous gift stalls located outside the venue. The quality of the merchandise varies but was consistent in its high price. The food and drink at the venue was plentiful and of reasonable quality. The staff were friendly, well organised and attentive. The show was excellent and told the story of how Kauai came to be populated. It was however in the Vegas cabaret style with coloured lighting and smoke effects and ran for longer than needed in my view (around an hour). The hula was great and the flame dancers the best I have ever seen! If this is not your style then there are other more intimate luau’s that you can attend on the island. This however is the one that was pushed by the resort staff as it was the largest and easiest to book. You may need to book a couple of weeks ahead to attend a more traditional luau. It was interesting to note that if I had asked, the more intimate and traditional luau’s were available for booking at the concierge desk.
