Overview

Welcoming guests to Kauai since 2007, Luau Kalamaku is Hawaii's only luau show performed “in-the-round,” offering optimal views of the stage. Witness the unearthing of the pig from the traditional imu (underground oven) and enjoy a hula lesson. A craft fair featuring unique items by local artisans awaits on the sprawling lawn. Feast on a delicious buffet of local and familiar favorites and enjoy a Mai Tai from the open bar. The 45-minute main show tells the amazing story of the ancient Hawaiian legend of Kalamaku “child of the new land." Through laughter, fear, seduction and fire, a new legacy is created, born from the cherished seeds of their ancestors. The theatrical luau show culminates with a fantastic fire dream featuring fire poi balls and traditional fire knife dancing.

When I booked the luau I was afraid it would be a touristy thing. But this was not the feeling at all! Everything was well organized and coordinated, with greetings, time to check the crafts shops and a few drinks, and then the imu ceremony. I enjoyed the food buffet especially the fish and the sweet potatoes, but I didn't think it was excellent. What was excellent was the show though: a highly entertaining representation of the story of the first Hawaiians through amazing dancing, singing, live instrument playing and acting... the costumes were also awesome! I couldn't take my eyes off the stage! I had a great time and I'm happy I didn't book just the show because this way I had time to "get into the spirit" during pre-dinner and dinner, but I guess someone might be disappointed from the food and drinks and might want to choose the show-only option. With my regular seat I could see the stage very well.

We have been to them all and this was the best! Great setting, entertainment and wonderful food. I loved that they were so friendly and welcomed pictures with the cast after the show. The whole thing was so well organized and the food quality was better that the others by far. I will definitely come back and bypass the others in my next trip.

I have to admit that this was nothing what I had envisioned a Lūʻau would be. I thought this would be on a beach involving a pig being prepared in a pit in the sand. I was wrong ... but still pretty happy with the experience ... The Lūʻau "adventure" started with a problem when it came to transportation. You do want to take advantage of busing so you can drink and enjoy without having to worry about driving yourself. Please make sure you call there ahead to verify that they did not drop your reservation for the bus as they did in our case. It all turned out okay but still ... The place is a large covered area nowhere near a beach and you will not see any pits where they roast the pigs. There were a lot of vendors selling their crafts upon arrival so it felt a bit like a tourist trap at first. The food was not all that great but I guess there was pork (supposedly cooked in pits somewhere). The show was well done and reminded me a bit of Cirque de Soleil without the acrobatics. This is what really made up for everything ...
