Manatees/Sunset/Bioluminescence Tour

Overview
Experience everything the wildlife refuge has to offer with three distinct experiences packed into one three-hour tour! Launch your kayak in the daylight and surround yourself with Florida’s most-loved endangered species, West Indian Manatees! Sit back while the gentle giants roll, sniff, and nuzzle all around you. Dolphins are also active this time of day as they wrangle their dinner in the adjacent cove.

Next, head out to Bird Island, a federally protected rookery, to watch hundreds of birds soar in overhead. Ibis, herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, and roseate spoonbills and more all glide in their flocks to nest for the night. Be lulled into serenity by the gently rocking kayak as the sun descends for the night in the pinks, oranges, and reds of sunset.

Finally, the tour culminates in the season’s bioluminescent experience, whether it be summer bioluminescence, winter comb jelly bioluminescence, or a star-studded moonlit sky.

We ended up as the only two people and had a private tour with Bob as our guide. We watched the dolphins as we got loaded up and ready and then immediately hit the water finding numerous manatees. Bob was knowledgeable in every aspect of the wildlife refuge after completing over 800 previous tours there. He took us to numerous areas in the refuge to watch manatees, as well as Bird Island. At 8:45 PM the bioluminescence starts and he took us to areas that the fish were jumping out of the glowing water. This was one of the most amazing experiences that we have ever had and we travel a lot! When you meet Bob, ask him about our manatee rodeo!

I’d never really been kayaking before and thought that three hours may have been overreaching but it was not. I actually could have stayed out longer! Our tour guide Bob was great and we learned a lot from him throughout the whole tour. We saw manatees, mangroves, dolphins, mullet and lots of birds on Bird Island. The sunset was truly awesome and the bioluminescence cannot be described, you’d have to see it for yourself. When the mullet swam around the water in the luminescence is looked liked shiny torpedoes flying around under water. Awesome. The stars were also very pretty in the pitch black. Bob was planet spotting for us. My grandson and I had a blast and would most surely go again. We didn’t have any bug bite problems but gave ourselves a good spray. I wore long sleeve, long pants.

Yesterday was probably one of our favorite experiences, ever! Bob was a fantastic tour guide and had the best (and worst) dad jokes I’ve heard in a while. We were able to see manatees who came up to say hello, watched a pod of dolphins swim right by, visited an aviary for thousands of south Florida birds, were surrounded by jumping mullet fish (one hit me mid-air), watched an amazing sunset, and ended with the bioluminescence experience. We were told that it was a really good day for the bio and very bright. Pictures can’t possibly do this justice. It’s just incredible to see the water around you glowing this vivid blue when the fish swim under you. It’s something I’ll never forget.
