Manatees/Sunset/Bioluminescence Tour

Overview
Experience everything the wildlife refuge has to offer with three distinct experiences packed into one three-hour tour! Launch your kayak in the daylight and surround yourself with Florida’s most-loved endangered species, West Indian Manatees! Sit back while the gentle giants roll, sniff, and nuzzle all around you. Dolphins are also active this time of day as they wrangle their dinner in the adjacent cove.

Next, head out to Bird Island, a federally protected rookery, to watch hundreds of birds soar in overhead. Ibis, herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, and roseate spoonbills and more all glide in their flocks to nest for the night. Be lulled into serenity by the gently rocking kayak as the sun descends for the night in the pinks, oranges, and reds of sunset.

Finally, the tour culminates in the season’s bioluminescent experience, whether it be summer bioluminescence, winter comb jelly bioluminescence, or a star-studded moonlit sky.

Our guides were Brandon and Alex. Brandon was absolutely hilarious and so knowledgeable. He knows this area so well. He explains things in a way that is easy to understand and makes you want to hear more about the wildlife. He wasn't our lead tour guide but definitely would have been a great one if he was. The tour was pretty cool. It would have been better if we spent more time over where the dolphins were playing. We only got to see a few of them and that was from a distance. However, we did see a lot of manatees! They were all around us. The middle of their hangout area seemed to be where a lot of mating action occurred so it was best to stay more on the outskirts if you didn't want to take a chance on these gentle giants bumping your kayak and laughing at you taking a swim. Lol. On a side note, there is a ramp by where the manatees gather. I would suggest coming back to that area when you have time and watching them from there. It's a cool experience! You can also reach down and pet them if they get close to the ramp which they do often. The Bioluminescence experience was a trip. It was such a beautiful sight seeing the water look florescent green. Our guides spotted an alligator by its glowing orange eyes but it was gone by the time we paddled over there. The day we went the water was a little choppy so if you tire out easy, or have physical limitations, it may be a bit much on you.to take the 3 hour tour unless it's calm on the waters. Overall it was a neat experience. If you want a funny and knowledgeable tour guide, ask for Brandon. He'll make your experience that much more fun! Stay safe and happy kayaking!

Four guides were friendly and informative while giving us the opportunity to sort of enjoy things ourselves. I felt totally safe and the guides seemed to always be one step ahead of the weather. I felt very prepared and knew what to expect based on the briefing before we hit the water. Guides offered to take pics multiple times and we’re very informative. I learned a lot about the refuge, the birds, manatees, domino flagellate, and dolphins from the eve dudes between awe inspiring moments like the sunset or manatees saying hi three feet from our kayak. It was an incredible, must do experience and I highly recommend this outfit
