Manatees/Sunset/Bioluminescence Tour

Overview
Experience everything the wildlife refuge has to offer with three distinct experiences packed into one three-hour tour! Launch your kayak in the daylight and surround yourself with Florida’s most-loved endangered species, West Indian Manatees! Sit back while the gentle giants roll, sniff, and nuzzle all around you. Dolphins are also active this time of day as they wrangle their dinner in the adjacent cove.

Next, head out to Bird Island, a federally protected rookery, to watch hundreds of birds soar in overhead. Ibis, herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, and roseate spoonbills and more all glide in their flocks to nest for the night. Be lulled into serenity by the gently rocking kayak as the sun descends for the night in the pinks, oranges, and reds of sunset.

Finally, the tour culminates in the season’s bioluminescent experience, whether it be summer bioluminescence, winter comb jelly bioluminescence, or a star-studded moonlit sky.

There were only four customers and the tour guide Bill, so we got the private tour for the price of group. It was a beautiful late afternoon and evening. We were out in the water for 4 hours. The Manatee Cove was awesome; one giant mammal got up next to Bill kayak to nip on his seat strap and got few gentle scratches on his head in return. Indian River was an interesting place to explore. The salt-and-fresh water is shallow (3-4 foot deep) and abundant with fishes and wildlife. Bill pointed out many bird species and their distinctive features. Cloud was thick at the horizon so we did not see the sunset except for the orange glow picking out. The darkness brought out the bioluminescence in the water and that was a phenomenal! Strokes of your oars, fingers dragging in the water, and small fishes swimming created pools, streaks and droplets of amazing bright green-hue luminous light. These quickly disappeared into the darkness and appeared again with every movement you made. We also explored the Mosquitoe Lagoon (very aptly name for its buzzing night residents, so be sure to have plenty of bug spray on you). Paddling back was a little tough as we went against the water current. We spotted dolphins and alligators along the way. Highly recommend this tour for anyone who like to see the “wild” side of Florida. Special thanks to Bill for the good time we had.
