Manatees/Sunset/Bioluminescence Tour

Overview
Experience everything the wildlife refuge has to offer with three distinct experiences packed into one three-hour tour! Launch your kayak in the daylight and surround yourself with Florida’s most-loved endangered species, West Indian Manatees! Sit back while the gentle giants roll, sniff, and nuzzle all around you. Dolphins are also active this time of day as they wrangle their dinner in the adjacent cove.

Next, head out to Bird Island, a federally protected rookery, to watch hundreds of birds soar in overhead. Ibis, herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, and roseate spoonbills and more all glide in their flocks to nest for the night. Be lulled into serenity by the gently rocking kayak as the sun descends for the night in the pinks, oranges, and reds of sunset.

Finally, the tour culminates in the season’s bioluminescent experience, whether it be summer bioluminescence, winter comb jelly bioluminescence, or a star-studded moonlit sky.

You cannot go wrong with A Day Away Kayak Tours!!! We personally love having Brian as our guide and we pay a bit extra ($5/person) to have a private tour. The 3 hour tour will transition from late afternoon to an amazing sunset into the darkness where the waters comes to life glowing with plankton and bio-luminescence. This is not just a paddle and look tour, Brian will share all his knowledge of birds, fish, matinee, dolphins and so much more! We first did this tour when our kids were 7 and 9 (one child one parent per tandem kayak) they enjoyed the entire tour and Brian ensure they were immersed in the experience. He helped them catch comb jellies, stir up the plankton and taught us how to respect the animals and the area. He knows all the best places to see the best stuff! Be sure to bring water and bug spray, no way to avoid the bugs and you will be working to move your kayak. But no worries on getting stranded, if you get in area where you need help, your guide will tether your kayak and help you along the way. We are customers for life!

All I saw was the back of my husbands head and paddles. We were so spread out we couldn’t hear the guide. Other groups on the water with single boats appeared to be to at least stay together.

The first thing we did was visit two manatee areas. I often see manatee but have never had a chance to be that close to them. It was Awesome. About sun down we headed for the island where the birds roosted. It was quite windy on our way there. As a result it was dark by the time we got there, but it was still great. You could hear the birds and we saw another manatee. Next we head out to see some bioluminescence. We did not see much, but that is the way nature is, plus the moon was almost full making it harder to see. Caught a few comb jellies. However we did get to see a pod of dolphins swim through. Exciting!!! Our guide was great and we had a blast and I am ready to do it again.
