Manatees/Sunset/Bioluminescence Tour

Overview
Experience everything the wildlife refuge has to offer with three distinct experiences packed into one three-hour tour! Launch your kayak in the daylight and surround yourself with Florida’s most-loved endangered species, West Indian Manatees! Sit back while the gentle giants roll, sniff, and nuzzle all around you. Dolphins are also active this time of day as they wrangle their dinner in the adjacent cove.

Next, head out to Bird Island, a federally protected rookery, to watch hundreds of birds soar in overhead. Ibis, herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, and roseate spoonbills and more all glide in their flocks to nest for the night. Be lulled into serenity by the gently rocking kayak as the sun descends for the night in the pinks, oranges, and reds of sunset.

Finally, the tour culminates in the season’s bioluminescent experience, whether it be summer bioluminescence, winter comb jelly bioluminescence, or a star-studded moonlit sky.

Most importantly, Bob was AMAZING! From the very beginning, it was as if we'd known each other for years. We were able to see many manatees playing in the water, checked out the mangrove maze, went over to bird island and watch thousands of birds flocking in for the night. Birds of a feather DO stick together and the all seemed to have their own area to hang out. Then a nice paddle where the bio was....even found some comb jellies! But back to Bob.....his shared so much information about the trees, the area, the manatees, birds, and the bio -- I would definitely recommend this tour to others!

First off, our tour guide Bob was the best. He was full of interesting facts, jokes, and general knowledge. We spent almost 4 hours with him playing with manatees, looking for gators, birding, catching (and releasing) bioluminescent jellyfish type creatures, kayaking around bioluminescent water, and learning about the NASA, the area, and everything we saw. He was very straightforward and friendly, didn’t cut any corners or seem in any rush, making our time with extremely enjoyable. We kayaked about 5 miles, which seems like a lot, but it was very reasonable for us. Bring bug spray (there are bugs), a towel (you’ll get wet), and a tip (because Bob made the trip price a bargain for everything he showed and taught us). Thanks to Bob and A Day Away, a great experience for anyone in the area. (PSA, if you’re coming from disney area of Orlando and don’t have a toll pass, it’s $6 cash each way. Avoiding tolls would’ve tacked on 30 min to our drive each way)

We were able to see many Manatees, birds and wildlife. The Bio Bay part was even better. The Bio was bright and there were numerous Comb Jelly Fish to catch. Phillip our tour guide did a great job explaining everything to us during our tour. This tour should be on everyone's bucket list. We have been to the Bio Bay in Fajardo PR and Salt River St. Croix and the Indian River Lagoon Bio Bay is just as bright. The Comb Jelly Fish are more numerous here and we caught almost 40 of them during the tour and let them go afterwards. This tour is a must!!
