Manatees/Sunset/Bioluminescence Tour

Overview
Experience everything the wildlife refuge has to offer with three distinct experiences packed into one three-hour tour! Launch your kayak in the daylight and surround yourself with Florida’s most-loved endangered species, West Indian Manatees! Sit back while the gentle giants roll, sniff, and nuzzle all around you. Dolphins are also active this time of day as they wrangle their dinner in the adjacent cove.

Next, head out to Bird Island, a federally protected rookery, to watch hundreds of birds soar in overhead. Ibis, herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, and roseate spoonbills and more all glide in their flocks to nest for the night. Be lulled into serenity by the gently rocking kayak as the sun descends for the night in the pinks, oranges, and reds of sunset.

Finally, the tour culminates in the season’s bioluminescent experience, whether it be summer bioluminescence, winter comb jelly bioluminescence, or a star-studded moonlit sky.

This kayak tour had everything. We enjoyed paddling on the mangroves and seeing the biodiversity that Florida's wetlands hold. We also enjoyed historical and cultural facts from our well versed guide Bob. He had a wealth of information to share yet knew how to allow you to take in the breathtaking night sky in silence. Even with no experience in kayaking we felt at ease and found it to be easy to pick up!

Our third trip with A Day Away was exactly as we expected. As experienced kayakers we chose the Mondo Tour for more extensive kayaking, even though we were accompanied by our 15 year old granddaughter. The manatees were easily spotted in the cove, and surfaced later under one of our kayaks providing a wonderful experience. Bird Island is amazing, and even though it had been cloudy the sun came through for a beautiful sunset. As we paddled back into an empty cove to observe the bioluminescence even our granddaughter was heard to say "Wow. Thanks to our guide Bob for a delightful trip, even better than we expected. We have never been disappointed with A Day Away.

This was the guided kayak trip I've been searching for since coming to Florida (quick escape from extended Minnesota winters). Tour booking and email correspondence was easy, professional, and prompt. THE TOUR ITSELF WAS AMAZING!!! Our guide was generous enough to modify our "route" and time to ensure we experienced the Space-X rocket launch from the Kennedy Space Center... a "once in a lifetime" for us. The guide's knowledge of the wildlife and area history is impressive, making us comfortable learning and asking questions. We felt safe (especially after dark) and welcomed every minute, and plan to return whenever in Florida. In fact, I plan to book multiple kayak trips next time, it was that enjoyable.
