Manta Magic - Night Manta Ray Snorkel At Manta Village, Kona, Hawaii

Overview
Avoid the crowds of the other "cattle boats" in Kona, and enjoy a small-group manta ray snorkeling experience with a maximum of 12 passengers.

This tour departs from Keahou Harbor in South Kona and enjoys a short 5-minute boat ride to our snorkeling site, Manta Village.

Your Captain and snorkel guide will educate you on Kona's famous manta rays and will discuss our safe and humane approach to engaging with the gentle giants.

After entering the water, you'll hold onto our lightboard, with your feet propped up by floatation devices, as the manta rays perform a graceful ballet beneath you. The manta rays filter feed on plankton that naturally gathers at the surface just before sunset, then accumulates underneath our lights. This is an opportunity to enjoy an evening on the water and watch in amazement as the manta rays glide around and dance for you.

We are proud to be a Green Listed company, and we take an environmentally cautious approach to our interactions with the manta rays.

This is one of those experiences that is great while it's going on and even better when you reflect back on it. My 12 year old daughter and I did this a few nights ago and it was incredible. The crew (Chad and Caleb) were fantastic and made everyone feel really comfortable. We had one non swimmer in our group and they brought the board to the boat so she could hold on almost immediately after getting in the water. Once we were in the water (and yes there are wetsuits so you won't be cold in the water), we were fortunate enough to have two large mantas do roll after roll under the board while they scooped up the plankton. They get really close and a few of us were touched by them as they glided past. Everyone had a great view and we saw mantas for pretty much the whole time we were in the water. We should have had a clue that it was going to be a good night when we could see mantas by the board before we were even off the boat. Definitely try to fit this into your schedule. You will LOVE it.

Ok first note I am a little older (60’s), so know all ages can do this as they are very attentive to all in the group making it a great experience regardless of age or experience. I choose the late evening tour and we did see the manta’s up close and personal. It is not an experience you can describe unless you do it. I was never cold as quality wet suits are provided and quality snorkeling gear too. I was able to get a prescription mask since I wear glasses. No extra charge and it gave clarity to viewing. The mantas are basically feeding and not even aware you are watching them as they do dives and flips inches from you to fill their filter open mouths. The plankton was at a level 5 ( which is good) and about 4 to 5 mantas took turns demonstrating their magic for about 30 minutes. The guide is with the group in case anyone needs assistance on the spot. If you worry about not floating well ( feet sinker), noodles are provided which will do the trick. I did use one just to save some energy. You can take a water proof bag sealed with camera for videos, or a water cased go camera . You hold on using two handles and it is totally safe. The boat ride home was with the moon over the ocean and the lights of the shoreline with snacks if you wish. All backpacks were stored on board and nothing got wet. Real top notch and fun tour that is not available to all any where else in the world. ( so I think ) Do it my friends. The Manta Rays are an amazing creature of the ocean. We are still talking about it.
