This is a bucket-list event, in my opinion. You are so high above the islands and, if it is clear, your view I fantastic. I know you’re high because I got some altitude sickness. Still, with the dizziness, it was still worth it, a fantastic experience.

We had a great time with Zack at the Summit. He took us stargazing after the sunset and he and Mark took pictures of everyone with the milky way and showed us pictures through the telescope. They also gave a great presentation of the constellations and how to find the North Star.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Hawaii. Zach and Tay did a great job! They taught us so much about the night sky. The day we went just happened to be the day of a total lunar eclipse so that made our experience even more memorable! It was very cold (22 degrees, 40 mph wind gusts) at the top so we were very grateful for the fashionable parkas that are provided. The high altitude definitely affects your ability to breath so it was also comforting to know that they has emergency supplies if needed. Getting picked up in Hilo was easy. We parked in the overflow parking for the Grand Naniloa Hotel (across road from the Crown Room). I was a bit concerned about parking there since we weren't a guest of the hotel but it was no problem at all. They have plenty of parking (very dark parking lot at night and the area is a bit run down looking). Two things that I wish I had done: 1. bring a light jacket for the brief stop at the visitor's center 2. bring a water bottle (they don't sell bottled water at the visitor's center). FYI - they do have port-a-potties at the summit.
