Forget the cruise liner versions of glacier viewing! We travelled on the Valdez Spirit from Whittier to Meares Glacier and then on to Valdez, as a Cosmos Tours specially chartered version of the standard "Meares Glacier from Valdez" offering by Stan Stephens Glacier & Wildlife Cruises. It was absolutely brilliant! With only 34 guests (it takes up to 150) there was plenty of room to view the scenery from within and out on deck. Lunch was provided - very filling. Our skipper was highly capable in operating the cruise vessel, but was even more enthusiastic about describing the flora, fauna and scenery along the way. In fact she went out of her way to provide the guests with a great experience, often changing course and slowing to observe the best encounters. We saw two humpback whales, harbour seals and sea otters by the dozens, a sea lion colony, numerous different birds, ice flows and of course, Meares Glacier (including some calving of the glacier). Our skipper also provided an excellent history of the region, from First Nations occupation to the circumstances and impact of the Excon Valdez oil spill. This cruise (via a Cosmos Tour or booked direct out of Valdez) is a must for anyone visiting mainland Alaska.

We recently took the Stan Stevens Meares Glacier Cruise out of Valdez. What a delightful trip. The boat was comfortable, food and drinks were adequate and the captain and staff were knowledegable and friendly. When some significant feature was in sight, the boat would be halted or slowed down and even turned around for a better view. During the trip, we did not see any whales but we saw sea lions, a black bear, cute sea otters, harbor seals, mountain goats, bald eagles, cormorants, puffins, terns and various ducks. The trip to the glacier was exciting! The boat was stopped long enough for viewing the spectacular glacier as well as the lounging harbor seals on pieces of ice in front of the glacier and also one calving (breaking off of ice from the glacier). We saw the terminal port for the Alaska pipe line as well as magnificent views of the terrain throughout the trip. While Valdez is not on the usual path for tourists, it is worth going to just for the glacier cruise

Cruised from Whittier, AK to Valdez, AK on a sunny and gorgeous day. Not much wildlife to be seen, unfortunately, but the cruise was spectacular anyway. All staff were helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. We took a side trip to Meares glacier to see it close up and were not disappointed as it calved several times while we were there. Dinner was served and was quite good.
