We recently took the Stan Stevens Meares Glacier Cruise out of Valdez. What a delightful trip. The boat was comfortable, food and drinks were adequate and the captain and staff were knowledegable and friendly. When some significant feature was in sight, the boat would be halted or slowed down and even turned around for a better view. During the trip, we did not see any whales but we saw sea lions, a black bear, cute sea otters, harbor seals, mountain goats, bald eagles, cormorants, puffins, terns and various ducks.
The trip to the glacier was exciting! The boat was stopped long enough for viewing the spectacular glacier as well as the lounging harbor seals on pieces of ice in front of the glacier and also one calving (breaking off of ice from the glacier). We saw the terminal port for the Alaska pipe line as well as magnificent views of the terrain throughout the trip. While Valdez is not on the usual path for tourists, it is worth going to just for the glacier cruise
