Maybe I chose the wrong time to visit George Washington’s Mount Vernon? (I went on a Monday in April. Arriving at 11:00am, with a 1:00pm mansion tour.) The mansion tour was disappointing. I spent more time waiting on line outside the mansion than I did taking the tour. Once inside the mansion, the tour was rushed and crowded. I hope you have a better experience than I did. The grounds of Mount Vernon are expansive, with pleasant views of the Potomac River. Lots of uphill walking and gravel paths. Be sure to see the slave quarters, various houses, gardens, farm, Washington Tomb, Slave Memorial, and go down to the Wharf.

Good afternoon, Thank you for your visit and for taking a moment to share your feedback. I regret to hear that you were disappointed with your Mansion tour. It is a privilege that Washington’s iconic home sits so near the city which bears his name, and yet it does present a challenge as we welcome over one million visitors each year, with March to June being our busiest season. This volume of guests exceeds that of nearly every other historic home by double–or in most cases much more–and presents us with a unique challenge. That said, we still strive to provide a welcoming, pleasant and informative experience to each and every one of our guests. Please accept my apologies if we did not achieve that during your visit. I have shared your comments with our Senior Visitor Engagement staff so that they are aware of your valuable feedback. We are currently working on tour improvements for a better guest experience. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts. We hope that you will come visit us again soon and allow us another opportunity to extend, in a more effective way, the Washingtons’ legendary hospitality.

This was absolutely worth the trip from DC. The estate was incredibly beautiful, and there was so much information provided. Your admission ticket gives you a timed entry to the actual house, while the rest of the time you spend exploring the estate. Both the tomb of Washington and the slave memorial were very somber experiences. Highly recommend anyone to go here.

A camera is a must for this tour. While you cannot take pictures inside the mansion, you can use it outside & in the out buildings. Besides personal effect of General & Mrs. Washington, you see how much work went into chores & everyday living. Their tombs are very moving. It's a fun way to learn history.
