The mansion was surprisingly not the highlight of the tour, but the grounds itself! The view of the Potomac alone is worth venturing out for. There were lots of daily scheduled activities available, and a very thoughtful presentation dedicated to telling the story of the 300+ enslaved people that lived on the former plantation, which presented a well-rounded tale of the Washington family legacy. To make the most of your visit: -Ask questions! The staff the is available on site and very knowledgeable! They truly enhance the experience. -Dress comfortably and for all weather conditions. It's best to go when the weather is great, but be prepared. -Take the path less traveled. Seek out all views from the wharf and be sure to see all the memorials before leaving.

My family and I went to Mount Vernon on a day trip and we had a great experience. The guides were very knowledgeable and helpful whenever needed and looked amazing. The house itself was being renovated in the front but all around it was a very fun time and a great experience.

This is one of my favorite places in the DC area. We visited on Easter Monday and even had the staff admit they weren't that busy that day. We were able to tour the house whenever we wanted. The tour itself isn't the best. You walk through rooms with a guide in each room, some are better than others. Some are very informative while others seem to "shoo" you through the room to make way for the next group. Once the house tour is over you are free to explore the grounds and they are simply beautiful. I could sit on the grass facing the Potomac all day if I could. Took the shuttle down to the Wharf and another amazing view of the water was found. Highlights for my daughter (4 y.o): the sheep and horses, the farm. Bonus: ask for the scavenger hunt game. This allowed her to interact with what she was seeing.
