Museum of the City of New York
The Museum of the City of New York features two ongoing exhibitions--the award-winning New York at Its Core, a three gallery exhibition that explores New York City’s history and future through objects, images, contemporary video, photography, and interactive digital experiences, and Activist New York, an exhibition which seeks to tell the story of activism in the five boroughs past and present. There are also several special exhibitions on view at any one time and the short documentary Timescapes, a multimedia historical storytelling, bringing viewers on a 28 minute journey through 400 years of history. The film runs every 40 minutes and headsets are available in French, Mandarin, and Spanish.

We found that there was plenty to see at this museum. The exhibits were varied, well presented and informative and we enjoyed the Timescapes film which gave a comprehebsive overview of the history of the city.

Exhibits were wonderful! Learned a lot about the history of New York. Staff friendly and helpful. Gift shops had a lot of wonderful and unusual items. Amy's Bread Cafe was very good! Only one person taking orders though and delivering food so it took a while!

You begin with a well-produced, short film on the history of New York City (from the Dutch in the 1600's to current times). Then you can visit various temporary exhibitions relating to some aspects of New York City history. But the best parts of the museum are the permanent exhibitions, explaining various time periods in history as well as numerous people who influenced the city's history. These exhibitions include interactive column/tv screens that allow you to scroll through them. There is even one on the history of pigs roaming Manhattan streets. We visited because we've seen just about every top 20 tourist attraction in the city. Time to branch out to the less visited options. Very enjoyable. Probably a 5 for history buffs.
