Upon entering this bright, welcoming museum, there is an introductory 20 minute film covering the history of Manhattan Island and the growth of the boroughs . Then there are large rooms with large, moving photo montages covering the arts, politics, daily life over the years. Another room has artifacts from New York’s first days. Then another the history of gay life in New York. There is a cafe with a small menu but clean and very tasty. I highly recommend this museum despite the long subway ride to get there. It gave me a deeper appreciation of this place and its people as well as a better understanding of how my grandparents lived after emigrating there in the early 1920s.

This lively museum has lots for kids and young adults. In addition to presentations on New York's distant past, they specialize in the 20th century, and are most concerned with the lives of ordinary people. checkout the website to see what's on when you visit. In May or June especially, don't miss the Conservatory Garden across the street, with some of the prettiest flowering trees and gardens in New York City -- for free. Rarely crowded!

This is a a very special museum. It presents an excellent history of the City of New York through a series of films, photographs, art, artifacts and exhibits. The museum does an exceptional job addressing the wide array of contemporary economic, political and social issues that impact and shape the evolution New York, the nation and the world. I particularly enjoyed the Social Activism exhibition which included the civil rights movement, women's rights, gay rights, immigration, labor and more.
