Mush Your Own Sled Dog Team (Summer/Fall Tour)

Overview
This is the only place in Alaska where you can mush your own team of dogs in the summer!

This is not a just a tour kennel; it is the training grounds and homestead of 4-time Iditarod champion, Dallas Seavey. All the dogs are either retired racing dogs (many have won the Iditarod), are currently on the race team, or are the next generation in training to become the next great champions! Our dogs are active and training year-round. As a guest musher here, you become part of Dallas Seavey Racing's year-round training program.

The group size for this experience is usually 6 or less people, with a guide assigned to each group, creating a very personal experience.

All of our dogs are extremely friendly, and love attention. Cuddle puppies, romp with young dogs, or walk with champions.

4 of my friends and I had the chance to mush a wheeled sled dog cart earlier this month. We met Dallas and his wife one night in Talkeetna and they couldn't have been any friendlier. We were picked up by Dallas at the Talkeetna office and shuttled to the training camp. The dog yard was filled with dozens and dozens of Alaskan Huskies waiting to run. We were left in the very capable hands of Jesse Salyer who will be racing in next year's Iditarod. We had a chance to examine the gear, ask questions, and learn the history of the event and all the challenges faced. We then walked to the yard and were given instructions on how to drive the sleds. We broke off into two groups of 2 and one solo wheeled sled. "Keep the dogs under tension and ride that brake or else they will run too fast" was the main point paraphrased. We took turns riding and driving through a woodland track over rocks and mud. What a blast! Along the way, the dogs rested and we saw the mock up of an Iditarod rest area. You don't know how much fun this is until you feel the dogs propel you down that track. Afterwards, we met some of the past champ dogs and some of the puppies. I swear, if I lived in Alaska and had the space and open areas, I would have taken home this one little pooch. Overall, this 2-3 hour trip is absolutely worth it! Thank you AK Dog Sled Tours and kick some butt next year in the race!

This was so much more than what we expected. Driving the dog sled was a unique experience, the dogs are all very friendly and fun. We learned so much about the Iditarod and how much goes into the care of the animals. Definitely a great tour.
