Great last day of the season rafting trip with West Virginia Adventures. Croc is a super, very experienced guide with lots of jokes and funny stories. Safety is a high priority. Rafted under a bald eagle in a tree. Great lunch and a good wet suit. This family business is great. The upper New River rapids are exciting and refreshing.

There are a lot of companies you can choose for rafting on the Gauley river and New River. I have used a couple, and this time tried, on the advice of a friend, West Virginia Adventures. Which one you should use depends on what you want. Some companies offer a lot of extras - "fancy" restaurants (may or may not be to your liking), bars, meal plans, a wide variety of lodging, lots of logos on your gear, other things like rope courses and zip lines, and large meals on the river. I won't say those things are bad, but they add to the price. If you don't feel like paying for that stuff, but want a very well guided and exciting rafting trip on the Gauley or the New river, then West Virginia Adventures is a really good option for you. Their gear is good, the guiding is very good, the trip will be fun, and the cost will be less than the more "fancy" places. It's really a question of what you want. If what you want is mostly rafting, then this is a place you should certainly consider at the top of your list. If you want a bunch of other stuff, too, you might look at some other places. For the rafting, this is a great place to go.

I've been rafting with Rob Dobson and WV Adventures for almost 10 years now. I went with him initially because in calling around to different outfitters, he was by far the most flexible and tailored a weekend that met our needs. Rob and his crew deliver no-nonsense, intimate river knowledge with humor and a smile. Every guide I've been with has been relaxed, fun - usually a total character! - but also 100% skilled and on top of the situation at all times. I've gone on easy trips down the New with little kids and a girlfriend who was nervious before her first time on the water. I've paired up with other groups for wild, Upper Gauley rides, slicing through massive Class V holes. While every rafting trip is unique, WVA's easy-going professionalism has never wavered. I've had a blast every time, and shared a beer and campfire with some great people when the day is done. I'd highly recommend this small outfitter over anyone else running West Virginia's rivers.
