Hop on Hop off Bus tours is, in my opinion, the best way to tour NYC or any other major city. You can get on when and where you want, stay as long or as little as you like and get off wherever you choose. If you have a multi day pass and don't want to take the time to study the route map you can get on and just stay on the bus till you get back to where you started. You can then determine where you want to go (and what you want to pass on) then schedule your time accordingly. Hopefully the weather will be good (not our case) in which case if it is raining you will want to either have a good raincoat and umbrella (transparent best for this case) or stay in the lower level. The guide will give you full details along the route and at every stop. My apologies for no pictures from the bus as I did not want to get my canon 7d MKII wet.

Don’t normally review bus tours but felt needed to on this occasion, mainly as standard differed so much: Downtown red loop - guides great, really informative and knowledgeable. Statue of Liberty cruise - great trip, informative and interesting. Downtown red loop/Brooklyn - guide kept missing landmarks, felt like we were looking back over our shoulders all the time. Brooklyn guide was good but not much to see other than the Manhattan skyline. Harlem - interesting and informative, good tour guide. Uptown blue loop - guide was useless (blond bloke), think he was auditioning for a game show. Made sarcastic comments as we left about a tip, he was hopeless. Would still recommend these bus trips as you get to see main sights and then work out where you want to go but the differing levels of knowledge by guides can affect your experience.

We used the bus tour as part of our NY pass. We had been on the circle boat tour and a walk over Brooklyn bridge. We jumped on the bus and took the tour all the way back to the beginning. Patrick the tour guide was interesting and chatty. It gave a great chance to see the whole of the East side.
