My friend and I were being constantly harangued by many, many different bus tour companies and we wandered the streets of Midtown, and eventually ended up buying tickets that permitted us one day tour and one night tour. We weren't told that for an extra $20 we could've added on the Liberty Cruise - but being first timers in NYC, we were happy with what we had and saw it as an excuse to one day return.
The day tour was a bit hit and miss, lots and lots of sitting in traffic in the blazing sunshine (not the buses fault, so not detracting any points for this!) but after sitting on the bus for over an hour and only making it to Empire State Building, we decided to cut our losses and hop off with a view to hopping on again for the night tour.
The night tour was much better, as we ascended to the top deck the friendly bus driver pointed us in the direction of a box of plastic poncho raincovers. We grabbed some with the intention of keeping as a souvenir, as the weather had been more than pleasant all day, but sure enough as soon as we started moving the rain began - so on the ponchos went!
It was incredible to see the sights of NY by night, even though it's the city that never sleeps, there was something really tranquil about watching everything from the top deck. Headphones are available for those who wish to plug in and listen to the guided tour, but we opted not to.
If we ever get to return to the Big Apple, we will definitely go with TopView again (even if the street team are a bit much!) and book the Liberty Cruise!
