Old Town Key West Literary Walking Tour

Overview
Join us every weekend for the Old Town Literary Walking Tour, a stroll through downtown Key West, illuminating stories of writers that have called our island home. Inspired by David A. Kaufelt’s original literary walking tour, our new tour features the former homes and favorite haunts of writers, including Tennessee Williams, Shel Silverstein, Elizabeth Bishop, and Robert Frost, and highlights tales of our lesser-known local talent.

This review will of necessity be abbreviated. I do so because our specific tour left off a couple of stops and rushed through others. That is because our tour was scheduled the same day as the final session of the Key West Literary Seminar's final session. Our guide wished to ensure that we concluded in plenty of time to get to that final session. Our guide had done her research. She came prepared with a well-written, entertaining tour script. She had photos saved in her smart phone to pass around showing what Shel Silverstein's home looked like prior to its destruction during hurricane Irma. She also included brief passages from some of the authors' works. I would like to do the tour again, on a day when our group is not pressed for time so that I can give a more fair assessment.

I took Saturday morning off from the lectures of the Key West Literary Seminar to learn more about the island's rich literary history. Sarah G did not disappoint. The walk is paced well and informative. It does not duplicate some of the already key-attractions of the island (such as the Hemingway Home), but instead pauses at other key homes, sites, and landmarks and includes literary greats (Tennessee Williams and Shel Silverstein), but some of the lesser known names that are equally interesting. I have new short stories, novels, and poems for my To Be Read list.

The Literary Walking Tour is a perfect way to spend a morning. Who knew there was so much literary activity in this town? (We all knew about the bars!) Actually, quite a lot of the literary energy was IN the bars. Loved every minute.
