Old Town Key West Literary Walking Tour

Overview
Join us every weekend for the Old Town Literary Walking Tour, a stroll through downtown Key West, illuminating stories of writers that have called our island home. Inspired by David A. Kaufelt’s original literary walking tour, our new tour features the former homes and favorite haunts of writers, including Tennessee Williams, Shel Silverstein, Elizabeth Bishop, and Robert Frost, and highlights tales of our lesser-known local talent.

As someone who’s captivated by the romanticism of literary culture and a voracious reader of anything produced by it, I found this tour to be quite enchanting. I was actually only able to catch the abbreviated version do to travel arrangements but found those 45 min to be filled with interesting stories and factoids about a number of individuals (Williams, Silverstein, Frost, Hemingway, Ellison, Hersey, Bishop, McGuane, etc) that knew Key West as home and influence. Will go again for the full tour on a subsequent visit!

So enjoyable! The tour is an easy walk with stops in front of residences of authors, playwrights and poets. The amount of time is perfect - there are short readings from the authors regarding their view of Key West and all the information is interesting and delivered in a lively professional manner. One of the best things that we did in Key West and compliments the Hemingway House tour.

Being both a Key West fan and a literary wannabe with some knowledge of certain writers, I moderately enjoyed this walk and thought it was pretty good. But our guide pronounced “Hersey” as “Hershey” and said Ralph Ellison’s “The Invisible Man” was about beng black in the 1970s. There were other painful errors that surprised me on a literary tour sponsored by a library.
