In late June, there is a "dead spot" in the fishing season, when COD, SALMON, and CRAB are all off at the same time. We still wanted to give it a shot (bottom fishing), and we also wanted to try PRAWNING... and we wanted to get close with some ORCAS. Outer Island was up to the challenge, and we took a five hour trip on a private vessel to knock out all three. Whale Watching was great... the Outer Island EXCURSIONS fleet had us on the Orcas in no time. Prawning was something new/fun, and made for a great grill dinner. The fishing was off, but I think it was a function of my poor scheduling. Make sure you know the fishing seasons before you book your trip to the San Juans. Now here's the unexpected part of my review... I fish a lot, and I understand that not every trip means CATCHING, but we had some equipment failure during the fishing portion of our day. For the money involved in a customized 5 hour trip, I do expect rods and reels to be 100%, and to have alternates at the ready. This was not the case on our day. So why to do I give them 5 STARS? The company stepped up and made it right. You don't see that much any more. I feel good about stating that you can trust this company to get you a great experience.

Quite honestly - this was a disappointing experience. I booked two tickets online for a trip on Tuesday, August 7th at 3:30pm. I typically go with Island Adventures, a competitor, but saw the Groupon for Outer Island Excursions and went with this company instead. However, I could not actually activate the Groupon - given that I had purchased it the day before. They needed more time to process the Groupon, and so I redeemed it with them for credit, and paid the full price. This was in part my fault - but the customer service was unpleasant. They do not advertise this on their website, but the droll and uninterested tone of the representative on the other side of the line implied that they have had this experience before. The ship itself was small, without much food, and a limited upstairs viewing capacity. The captain, was terrific, and a highlight of the trip. He made it enjoyable. However, the most disappointing part was that we saw one whale throughout the entire 3.5 hour trip. We found one humpback whale which we observed for approximately 30 minutes. We saw no orca whales. There was no conversation nor apologies for the fact that they advertise primarily not as a whale watching company, but as an orca watching company. They met their "whale guarantee" by showing us one humpback, and promptly left. Quite honestly, I understand that the whales are sometimes not where you expect they are. But there was no conversation at all about the poor showing. In short - this was overpriced, and disappointing. I went the subsequent week with their competitor and saw 8 orca whales. The crew had a much higher knowledge base, and was awesome. I would not go with this company again.

The boat and the guide are nice the boat ride is more than half the fun. Carry some layers of protective clothing and don't worry of the spray. We saw many Orca whales but due to whale protection rules, the boat have to maintain a distance. They are also not BIG ones like the humpbacks etc. so you will see them but not feel like WHALE watching. I would strongly recommend to do the tour. Pl book in advance and look for discounts on certain days of the week.(groupon etc)
