To avoid ferry cost to Orcas Island, you can also embark at the Semiahmoo Resort for the Whale Watching trip (it is near Blaine, WA). The boat is small which means you'll be traveling fast in a small group to where the action is. Our captain Matt was great. After watching the orcas, he took us north to see a gray whale as well. Highly recommended company.

The Outer Island Expeditions whale watching tour was amazing. Captain Beau was informative and had an extensive knowledge of orca whales and the San Juan ocean wildlife in general. In addition, he was friendly, was happy to answer all of our questions, and took us on an amazing tour where we saw not only a pod of ~30 orca whales but also harbor seals, sea lions, bald eagles, etc. I would highly recommend this tour, it was well worth every penny.

My wife and I have been on whale watching trips several times over the past 5 years and no prior trip was in the same universe as this one. This was a late season trip on a boat (Triton) that my wife and a friend had taken a few weeks earlier with success. This trip was very different. We were guided into Orca Whales in less than an hour after leaving the dock and were almost constantly within sight of multiple Orcas for nearly 4 hours. The very informative and delightful captain; Joe, extended the time on the water as we were in a fabulous viewing position that lasted and lasted. The day ended with a fast, smooth ride back to the dock as the sun was getting low in the west. Great crew, great boat and a truly memorable day with several outstanding photos for memories. My wife is a photographer and the stable platform provided by this particular boat was much appreciated. Thank you to the Outer Islands Expedition folks! We will be back.
